    Desert hiking shoes

I got back from Utah at Midnight on Monday. Paralyzed by indecision, I bought no shoes at all and wore my brown suede/russet leather Bass saddle shoes (I use them like most people use tennis shoes); switching to slip-on boat shoes when I was in the hotel. The saddle shoes acquitted themselves...

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

BP that is indeed a beautiful Fordor. In the Shoebox ('49-'51) years I vastly prefer the Fordors over the Tudors. They have the same roofline, but without those rear doors the Tudor just looks a little awkward - as though it really wishes it were a Club Coupe. -Dave

    Loungers' Pets

I am sad to report that I had to have Lady put to sleep this morning. At 13, her kidneys were in the last stages of failure, and I didn't want to see her suffer any longer. -Dave

Driving golden era cars in the modern era

tuppence, my grandparents had a Morris Minor when they lived in Japan in the mid-1950s. Apparently they were so ubiquitous there that they had a sticker in the rear window reading "There goes ANOTHER Morris". Initially they brought their 1952 Buick with them, but discovered it was too big (and...

    Does anyone read "Biggles" books?

I know I'm resurrecting a dead thread, but I was thinking of this film and did a search on the same topic. I enjoyed the film, but I've only read maybe one of the books. I saw it as a kid, and we had it on VHS because my brother, Dad, and I liked it so well. I always thought it was probably a...

Lots of brim curl there; the one on the left could almost be a thin-ribbon homburg. -Dave

There is a Photobucket iPhone app. I typically just e-mail the pictures to myself, then upload them to Photobucket in Internet Explorer, though, as I have a 3G and its getting to be too decrepit to handle most apps well. -Dave

What color ink do I need?

My brother recently sent me a large bottle of Montblanc Irish Green as a birthday gift (he has been traveling in Ireland for a number of months). I like it, but try to limit it to signatures and not-for-the-public notetaking, lest I be branded a member of the "green-ink brigade"! -Dave

Need a little advice about Fountain Pen Hospital

I took some, but I don’t claim they’re good: Amongst my other pens - Left to Right: Sheaffer Prelude, Waterman Phileas, the Parker Vacumatic, Sheaffer cartridge model, Sheaffer fine-point calligraphy pen, Esterbrook SJ. The cap. The nib. The plunger. -Dave

    The Cap Faction

I’m wondering if I can get some quick help here. I’ve been eyeing the Belfry Street Grimwig for a while. It’s a normal-looking eight-panel cap, but it comes in peached cotton, which I haven’t seen before and find appealing. I’m in a quandry, though, as I’m right on the line between L (7 3/8)...

Need a little advice about Fountain Pen Hospital

As a follow up: I got the pen back yesterday, very well packaged. I appreciate that; it shows they care enough about their reputation not to just toss the pen in a padded envelope for return to folks who elect not to use their services. -Dave

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

In my mind, three factors weigh in favor of making this trade: 1) The abbreviated 1942 model year - which makes the car rarer and therefore somewhat more desireable; 2) The family connection to a 1942 Plymouth; and 3) The extra cash. Three factors also weigh against: 1) The...

Tampa Rays wear fedoras, ride train to Boston

Tomasso, that's not a pure comparison, though; because D. Hermann's example was based on the hassles of flying due to transfers and security - which is probably not accounted for in the flight times you quoted. Although this may soon become a moot point, as I understand they're beefing up...

Tampa Rays wear fedoras, ride train to Boston

It may have been. I checked at different times, and wasn't sure. I hate to make overstatements. And freight does have priority on most lines - after all, it's the revenue-generating traffic. -Dave

Tampa Rays wear fedoras, ride train to Boston

I have ridden the train exactly once: Grand Rapids, MI to Chicago; in 1987. It was a birthday present when I turned five. I recently looked into taking rail from Michigan to Utah and was astounded - it was not much cheaper than flying. Nevertheless, I blame American disinvestment in rail...

Need a little advice about Fountain Pen Hospital

I believe in shopping local, and I looked hard for somebody in Michigan to do this work before I sent it off to New York City. My local source for typewriter repair and fountain-pen ink (“local” being two hours away in Grand Rapids) is who suggested FPH. Much as I’d like to pay a premium to...
