Every Time I Toss the Bacon Grease I Feel Guilty

I like to use plastic bags to line small garbage cans at home. A couple of major cities in my area have bans on plastic bags at retail stores. You can imagine how practical it is to walk down the street with a paper bag full of stuff and have the bag get soaked and fall apart during the 11...

Let's See Your Watches! The Vintage Watch Thread.

I don't mind a little touch of art deco included with an overall mid-century look. Another example is how Don Draper wore a Jaeger -LeCoultre Reverso in the early sixties in Mad Men season two. Yeah, I actually like that show. So sue me. :p

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

I loved Hail, Caesar! from the first time I saw it. I find it to be a wonderfully irreverent love letter to old Hollywood.

    Forward Time Travel

This whole scenario was explored quite thoroughly in Matt Groening's series "Futurama."

Any Classical ballet fans out there?

I enjoy it on occasion. Yes, the classical type, not so much the more contemporary kind... to me, contemporary ballet is usually a little too abstract. As far as record albums, I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help, as I only go for vinyl records from the 50s and 60s. I find that some people I...

    Tiki Culture

I would say that the Tiki subculture is a very real part of the overall retro-revival "culture." There are whole message boards dedicated to this stuff, with people who are seriously into seeking out authentic decor, enjoying rum cocktails while listening to exotica music, cataloging existing...

    Tiki Culture

That was another tendency of the whole tiki culture/scene... the places served Americanized Chinese food and rum cocktails (rum being more of a Caribbean thing), not authentic Pacific Islands fare.

    Tiki Culture

It's interesting how tiki culture developed and changed over the years. At first, the Pacific Rim-themed restaurants were a more upscale experience including elaborate shows, and it was appropriate to dress up to go there. As time went on, tiki eventually became relegated to dingy...

Every Time I Toss the Bacon Grease I Feel Guilty

Whenever I have a container of bacon grease collected from frying bacon, I simply use it for cooking the same way I would with other fats and oils, though I will usually cut it with olive oil. It's really good to cook popcorn this way. I don't think I would use bacon grease for cooking a dessert...

What do you use to shave?

Alas, on an everyday basis I usually just use an electric razor because it's quick and dirty. I prefer to use either a DE safety razor, or, if I have more time, one of my straight razors. I find the latter to be a relaxing, meditative and focusing experience.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

The word "jake" was used at least once in the novel , but not in the movie adaptation, to refer to things being OK, as in "everything will be jake." There was a humorous scene in the A&E "Nero Wolfe" TV series when Archie says "Everything's jake," to which Nero replies, "There is good slang and...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

I vote to bring back the term "jake," as used in Chandler's The Big Sleep.

    Favorite hair styling products: Pomade/brylcreem/etc...

I've switched from Murray's Super Light to the regular Murray's. Much better hold with my thicker hair, and not too shiny; just a mild sheen.

    1945-1953: Generally a forgotten era?

Disney's animated movie adaptation of Alice in Wonderland was released during this period, specifically 1951. And in the same year, there was also An American in Paris, with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron.

    Retro gym equipment?

I vaguely recall some old cartoon wherein a character got trapped in one of these and his whole body shrunk.

Sources of newer suits based on older designs

I couldn't find a thread specifically on this, so here we go. Sometimes, for whatever reason (can't find our size, can't find what we're looking for in good condition, etc.), we may opt for new suits, trousers, waistcoats, etc. instead of going authentic vintage. It can be difficult finding...

    Show us your TIES

Here's a pic, not sure how it got turned sideways. My camera phone does not do justice to the shade of yellow. Anyone have any ideas on where this could have come from? 1122161340 by PeterGunnLives posted Nov 22, 2016 at 2:05 PM

    Show us your TIES

I'm wearing a tie from (presumably) the 1950s that is 2.25" at the widest area, the squared bottom. The fabric is kind of a pebbly texture, golden yellow on the top, and burgundy toward the bottom. Interestingly for a narrow tie from that period, it has a hand-painted design of two peacocks (I...
