I would recommend the Stories of John Cheever. It's filled with fifties and sixties tales of suburban New England ennui and disillusionment, which would later partially inspire Mad Men.
When I was in high school in the nineties, MA-1 type jackets were popular with the alt rock and punk crowds. Some kids would treat them as reversible so that the bright orange part would be on the outside.
Places like Forever 21 and H&M have a lot of "fast fashion" items, which are trendy...
Actually, the McMenamins brewpubs have some pretty off-the-wall, new-agey, freaky hippyish decor that I would in no way describe as "Disneyfication." It's more like a Grateful Dead appreciation society or something, and very reflective of the eclectic Portland culture. If I was a kid I would...
Gotham is definitely in its own universe. There's no way it could fit well with the continuity of the Burton/Schumacher movies, the Nolan trilogy, or any of the comics, not to mention that it has nothing to do with the Arrowverse, which spans Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow.
Yes, Banana Republic also had a "Mad Men Collection" with a few items being released each year for a little while. I got both of the men's sport coats in that line, but at a deep discount on ebay. People do occasionally ask if they are vintage when I wear them.
I don't mind some brand names, logos, and the like being visible on casual clothing, but generally only if it's something vintage (or something that looks vintage). If I'm going to advertise, I'm going to advertise the bygone days. For example, I just ordered a long-sleeve T-shirt with a logo...
I enjoy the kitschy, deliberate "fifties-ness" that some people go for in their personal lives, because it definitely stands out as being vintage/retro. I'm thinking of shifting more in this direction myself. Currently, I maintain a "tasteful" Mad Men type image in my everyday personal dress and...
Lately for new spectators for my jitterbugging outfits, I have gotten into a brand called Messico (they're actually too stiff compared to true dancing shoes, but I make do). The shoes are handcrafted in Mexico, and are more affordable than some other brands. Alas, they don't have black/white...
Does it have to be vintage, or can it be new based on vintage styling?
Magnioli Clothiers (https://www.magnoliclothiers.com/) is a great source for the latter.
And congrats! :)
I'm making my way through The Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway, classic tales of rugged individualism, and The Stories of John Cheever, depictions of suburban ennui in New England that were a big inspiration for Mad Men.
It's got some great menswear styles, with some colors/patterns/cuts that I presume to be based on the elusive "bold look" of the post-war years. I look to stuff like this for inspiration for my jitterbugging outfits.
They should have cast the guy who played the younger version of Harrison Ford's character in "Age of Adeline." He definitely had the look and the mannerisms. And the same guy should also play young Han Solo, and young Jack Ryan... in fact, he should build his whole career on playing younger...
