Great pictures of some very special men one and all. It was actually Len Deightons well written novel Goodbye Mickey Mouse, that re-sparked my interest in WWII flying, pilots and fighteplanes. After that I dug into reading everything I could get hold on of 4th Fighter Group. (my usual way of...
Hi Alan - I have posted several in the repro Irvin thread. (Post# 1073 date 09.25.2013)
If you want to see how it has broken in, I'll be happy to do some closeups one of these days. And then I'll - again - post them in the Repro Irvin thread. (Where they belong) So look out there.
I am almost 99,9% sure this is my "Lightweight" ALC Irvin. Not much difference to the eye - but most certainly to the feel, flexibility and the weight.
Deacon - Take it from me. A grown and rather strong man - who has worn both types of ALC Irvins for many years. The heavy fleece is HEAVY! Meaning thick, almost impossible to bend your arms at the beginning of the breaking.in and WARM! Like steaming hot. Besides that it's stiff and cumbersome...
You can almost say that about the ALC "Irvin" as well, Deacon. Although I have not handled as many Irvins as Andrew, I have seen and worn my share, and I can tell you that the originals were not as thick, clumsy and heavy as the ALC version. By far!
So it seems like the replicates thought: OK...
Made it - and learned a lot too. Next time it will be shorter, more precise and also a lot more freestyle. Had to stick to a manuscript, just in order not to ramble along. But the audience was exited anyway and I got a standing applause after all. For what that is worth.
The best thing is to get...
To night I am doing my first - and maybe last - lecture on The Battle of Britain in general and on Albert G. Lewis in particular.
I have been asked several times to do this - and to night is the night.
The audience for this premier is a motorcycle club in Copenhagen. Strange to some - but they...
Smithy beat me to it. If you go for the ALC Irvin go for the lightweight version. The heavyweight is VERY heavy and VERY bulky - even for big, grown men. ALC went along with making a "Irvin" using their lightweight fleece - why not ask them, if they'll do it again?
You wife will thank you for...
So you ARE recreating a special unit jacket - and even as a tribute to your father! What a great idea. So sorry, but I did not get that out of your first post. Good luck with it - and looking forward to some pics too.
First: It's your jacket so feel free.
Secondly: If you do it, you might meet some people who knows 'bout things.
And they just might wonder what infantry unit wore pilot jackets?
Or ask you when you served in that specific unit? Or what is going on...?
Still - it's you jacket, so you can do what...
I remember when I got my Aces High Irvin in the late spring - almost summer .
I "flew open cockpit" every day just to get it broken in. It was only when my wife was with me in the car, that I rolled up the windows. lol
Congratulations, Deacon. Looking really, really great. And some very nice fleece too!
Just you wait - after a couple of years of use - and misuse - it will look and feel absolutely great! And you will feel at home in it.
To quote one of my favorite Volvo ads: Use it like you hate it! :)
Sounds great and congrats on your new jacket. Who would have thought that WPG could turn out something like that? Of course I only have the experience with their "Irvin" to compare with. But this time it really sounds like they have nailed it.
Looking forward to some pics too, mate.
Can't remember if I have shown these pics before, but when talking 'bout ALC jackets, here are a few pics of my late fathers very old ALC Irvin. It dates back to the late 70's.
I think it's a pretty nice leather/sheepskin jacket - but it has got nothing to do with an Irvin.
And personally I do not like the fleece . Way too much teddybear!:eusa_doh:
This is my kind of fleece...
I will not recommend any use of Pecards or any other stuff on a brand new jacket. Let it settle in. Use it. Misuse it!!! And then - after some years - you might want to add some Pecards. I only did it once on one of my Irvins.
After a tough hot water treatment of an Aero Irvin, in a successful...
I do not say anything.
And if I have to, it runs more or less like this:
Wife: "What do you need another leather jacket for? You already have one."
Me: "What do you need another pair of shoes/boots for? You already have 36 pairs."
The truth is that I sell off jackets before I buy a new one...no...
