I'm going to have to agree with going directly to the source, too. Look at as many real old photos as possible. 90% of the people weren't gleaming "beauties." lol 90% of the dresses are obviously handmade and ill-fitting.
Of course, I don't see anything wrong with looking "too perfect"...
Last night -- New Kids On The Block then some Al Bowlly before bed. Now New Kids On The Block again. lol I'm preserving old VHS tapes to DVD, hence why NKOTB.
Hehe. I just kid! I get embarassed because I always say how much I hate the Grateful Dead and there they are in my iPod -- just one song. lol I usually laugh if someone says something.
But I will proudly blare New Kids On The Block, Milli Vanilli, Girls Aloud, Spice Girls, and any "old...
One more valuable point to add -- LEARN ALL YOU CAN about the era you are interested in. Fashion, movies, music, sociology, politics, etc. That way you will ooze it, even when in jeans.
I had many people tell me when I'm in jeans and a t-shirt that "You are 30s no matter what you wear!"...
Heels are fine if you can walk in them. I'm takling about the impractical heels or the girls who CAN'T walk in them. They always end up looking the the shoes are wearing them.
You know what makes women look like vintage "wannabes" most to me? Impractical shoes for the situation. I've seen women stand for hours in silly shoes that they can barely walk in at events and such. They always look stiff and uncomfortable.
I wear COMFORTABLE SHOES at all times. I don't...
Learn to sew (if you don't know how already) and you can easily find patterns in sizes 10 or 12 that should fit you.
Also, it doesn't matter if you are purple -- vintage can be "pulled off" by anyone. I'm a ginger with freckles. Read any 30s or 40s beauty magazine and they will tell you...
I wear mostly jeans -- lol. Then I'll go through a phase where I'll wear 30s dresses that I've made. Then other times I'll be a total hot rockabilly mess! BTW -- I'm totally going to be saying that all the time now.
Be yourself? If you feel like you're in a costume it'll show. Don't wear something you think looks silly. Maybe it's because I'm older, but I could care less if someone thought i was a "mess." I usually play it up anyway! :D
Not if you do your own sewing!
I used to dress exclusively 1938-1941, but I don't anymore. Jeans and girl-cut Tshirts now with the ocassional handmade dress. When my work went to "casual all the time" I had a shift in dress. And my husband didn't really like the "all-vintage all-the-time"...
No one said NKOTB or any boy band was original. I certainly never thought so. Teenage girls are passionate creatures and that is why boy bands get as popular as they do. Every female teenage generation needs a "boy band", I think. :D
GOOD ONE!
I don't own anything by Van Morrison. I don't like him. My husband absolutely DESPISES him. I do have the complete New Kids On The Block discography, though. I love them.
Haha! What a difference two years makes! (Wow, it's been that long?) My husband DID get laid off later that year lol But he joined the NG and is way better off. He hated that job anyway so it was a good thing :D
I don't buy anything on that list anymore. Not because of belt-tightening...
The summer of 1998 was when the swing revival hit here. In 1997 I was really into the Squirrel Nut Zippers so it was just a natural transition for me to get into the other modern bands that came out.
The Squirrel Nut Zippers were and are excellent. The very best of the "revival." All the...
I just dabbled in real 30s/40s swing before this silly revival. After it, though, I was changed. Hence why I laugh when people cry about vintage being "trendy." Yes, it will attract a lot of sheep who will discard it next season, but it will also bring in people who are going to stick with it...
Haha! That last picture is actually the "Vamp" makeup I did from Kevyn Aucoin's Making Faces book. So the Clara Bow comment is much appreciated! :D Thank, gals!!
Also, I wouldn't mind if the same lady posted her outfit every single day. The same few guys do over and over. Not putting...
