Thank you for all the kind words - my son is little under the weather today, but plan to post some pics of him wearing it as soon as he is feeling better. I am also thinking maybe Dad needs a Roy Rogers hat in his size too?
I just posted yesterday's thrift shop find in the "new Hats" thread - a 1970s Stetson 5X with a tall crown/RCA crease for $15. I turned it into a Double-Teardrop ala Roy Rogers for my son last night (more pics in the New Hats thread).
After punching out the crease and peeling off the ugly...
Saturday Project
This is actually my eight year old son’s new hat. Sometime last year we watched the Roy Roger’s double-teardrop creasing video and my son has been fascinated by that crease ever since. I have been looking for the right hat to try this on and yesterday I found a 1970s Stetson...
Thanks - I just did a quick fix tonight (since the brim was flatter and much higher on one side than other), but I want to do something different with the brim since I have another hat that's almost identical. I am considering a curled-edge for the brim - still a western look, but different...
My Stetson 5X craigslist bargain - it just needed the brim reshaped (due to shipping or storage) and now it is good to go. I am guess-timating a 1980s vintage.
I was in Paris Hatters today and Abe told he had just been notified that he is being awarded the top retailer award for Stetson for 2012. He said he had been runner up a few times, but this was the first win.
Thanks! Other than a good brushing, this is the way I received it (and I plan to leave it as is) - it is a very soft felt, but is an older OR (I was thinking it was a 1950s OR, but it was suggested in another thread that it could be early '60s).
I like the brim up/cattleman look, but this will be the first OR I've left that way. Most of mine are vintage and have the brim snapped down. I have a modern OR in black that has the cattleman crease, but I have the brim curled for the "Hemphill" look - kind of western homburg.
That works...
Thanks! I have a number of Open Roads (and OR clones) - they're are about half and half cattleman and tear drop creases, but a most have the brim turned down in front. After playing around with this hat once I got it home, I think it will remain a cattleman and leave the brim up (it will be my...
My "New" Vintage 3X Open Road
My ebay win just came in the mail today and it is better than I expected. It has a minor sweatband issue that I was aware of, but it is otherwise a beautiful hat that fits like it was made for me. Auction pics only for now.
Final, after-Christmas bump - price down to $85 or best offer - free shipping in the US for Fedroa Loungers! Also open to thin-ribbon trades in 7-3/8 to 7-1/2.
