Imperial Campdrafts will tighten up some after shaping & wearing.
In open crown shape they may seem way too large but mine all come to my noggin after creasing & wearing.
No way you're doing anything but 'styling'! My grandfather wore his this way; he called it a snap brim & always snapped the front down.

I've cut down a few westerns to a more "city hat" width of 2 7/8", some to 3" & gave them a more "outback" look.
I do have my westerns that I wear nights & weekends but working in corporate software business, I wear the smaller brims to come off less "cowboy". Some still consider it a cowboy...
Try blotting with naptha soaked cloth? I got felt tip marker out of a felt hat using Zippo lighter fluid.
Mold is a different monster than just something adding color...
How do they feel zipped up & sitting down? Does the back ride too far up & does the front feel comfortable enough = not driving the collar up into your chin or throat?
I wear my 50's HB outdoors in winter, zipped up & sit at sporting events, on my tractor, etc.
