You know you are getting old when:

when … … you find yourself paying for conveniences you never would have in your earlier years. I’m expecting a greenhouse kit in a couple weeks, coming to me in greater Denver from greater Vancouver, BC. I’m paying $150 extra to have it delivered to my house rather than having to pick it up at...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

^^^^^^ Gotta suspect that Big Lou’s pitch is far differently received by his target audience. There remains a substantial chunk of the population that responds favorably to characters who take apparent pleasure in being obnoxious jerks. No need to name names.

    Western, anyone?

^^^^^ I’m guessing most of the younger men were off fighting the war.

You know you are getting old when:

Perhaps I’m among the few still routinely addressing others as “Sir” and “Ma’am.” And on a few occasions I’ve found myself considering if I might leave those ranks. It seems that some people take it as sarcasm. Younger women especially are apparently unaccustomed to being so addressed. Some...

    Western, anyone?

I doubt anyone suggested these fellows remove their hats while indoors.

You know you are getting old when:

When … … in contemplating actions you might take — recreational, entrepreneurial, educational, whatever — you find yourself muttering, “I better get around to that while I still can.”

Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

^^^^^^ When I was a youngster it was common for groups such as the Boy Scouts to borrow steel folding chairs from a funeral parlor when they needed the seating for special events. The name of the mortuary was stenciled onto the chair backs. I haven’t seen that in at least 50 years.

I bump this because I mentioned this yardstick to an undertaker I was chatting with a few days ago while I was attending a funeral. He told me it wasn’t unusual for furniture makers and retailers to be in the undertaking business also because, you know, the caskets. By pure coincidence...

^^^^^ A little noodling around online has me thinking this is a Telechron 2H15, dating from the early postwar period. It’s been hanging on this cabinet since last night. Keeps good time.

An addition to my old clock collection. I found it yesterday in a junk store in Cross Plains, Wisconsin. I had flown in to nearby Madison (the city of my birth, lo those many years ago) to attend a funeral.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

The tropical plants I keep on a covered deck during the warm months come back inside once the weather forecast calls for temperatures nearing freezing. I put them near windows and supplement light with LED fixtures. I recently bought a pair of four-tube fixtures that consume 60 watts each but...

    Western, anyone?

^^^^^ That 1940s guess seems more than plausible, what with $8.50 (the presumably regular retail price crossed out on the tag) and $4.95 (the sale price) in 1947 money has about the same buying power as $117 and $68, respectively, these days. Was it that hats — decent ones, made of fur felt or...

Midnight blue velour finish Ukrainian rabbit fur body, true vintage ribbon, roan sweatband. Just the thing for that Western-themed wedding.
