Everything about this post looks great. And I hear you on the screen name pain. I chose mine from my aol email address - long time passing. Never thought I'd be using it for so long. Always wished I had given it more thought.
Hat value can be augmented by story telling. Do some research on Jack Henry, which is a historic Kansas City retailer located in Country Club Plaza - the first shopping center designed for automobiles.
Thanks... I grabbed a few of these when Newspapers.com had a free sample weekend. These weatherized machine-made straws seem to have had a short run. I've not found an ad after 1940?
An antique parabuntal hat body that I had dreams of blocking and finishing myself. Happy that reason triumphed over fancy... Graham Thompson did a fine job (about 8 years ago). Hard to appreciate how light this hat is - 1.8 ounces on the scale, much of which is sweatband and ribbon.

Great Stetson collapsible opera hat... first I've seen marked as a Stetson Special. I think you're right at early 1940s or perhaps late 1930s. Have you tried collapsing the gibus frame? Is the sweatband attached to the liner where they meet? Here's how that works with another Stetson Opera Hat:
