Yes, lay it brim down on a table and press down from the top of the crown. It is spring loaded but should collapse with not too much pressure. The catch to hold it in the collapsed position engages as it reaches the end of its travel. It should pop open with a rap on your thigh. Never owned one that didn’t operate well, but obviously take it slow and easy.

Thanks, Alan.
Tried it and it works very well and easily. Took some work but I shaped the brim a little to give it more attitude. Was too flat. I like how it looks on. Really didn’t think I would.
Sewed the sweatband seam today.
After rechecking, I paid $28, which seems like a good deal for what I’ve seen others go for. Though, I’ve not paid much attention to them.

Dobbs Rosebud Florentine Milan Straw today. A plastic hat comes in handy when there are intermittent rains on my local beach.

Great! Certainly a very good price. It's almost time to get back out and visit the opera.

Vintage Royal Stetson Whippet fur felt. (probably mid to late 50's) The grosgrain ribbon has what appears to be a darkened stain from perhaps the glue used to adhere it to the fur felt? otherwise the fedora is in fantastic condition.
I found this cool cotton canvas waistcoat so I thought I'd try it on with a standard Walmart Wrangler shirt and 1942 style army Khaki chinos. Threw on the A-2 leather jacket to get a sense of what it might look like as an ensemble... a bit "Dr. Jones" but I feel comfortable in it. Now I await November weather so I can walk about town looking all Indy and the Temple of Dumb. :p

Two hat day today. My Knox raffia for a Costco dash into the emergency zone that is Osaka.
Excuse the snarl…it’s hereditary. Etsuko calls it my father’s face.

Etsuko wore her Borsalino.

The morning clouds drifted away and it turned into a very pleasant afternoon/evening for outdoor eating.

No barbecue smells to worry about today, so I chose my Akubra Range.

Etsuko chose a squishable Maxim.

Hats of this week.
Penumbra panama (when it was still undamaged). The wind blew it off a table yesterday and it landed exactly on the pinch, damaging the straw. Witnesses, if there were any, might have seen me cry a little).

Wind. Enemy to hat guys throughout time. Firefighters, too. My brother is one.
I like the Huckel best, though they all look great. That outfit with that hat is top tier! I don’t have any reason to be in a suit very often, but enviously, you guys sure bring men folk up!

Nice color on that Whippet. The discoloration is probably sweat that came through. A Stetson of that era should have all sewn components, no glue.

I'm sorry for the windblown scrape... collateral damage we face when sharing stuff with our hat friends. I can still remember every popped stitch I've caused hunting for clues behind sweatbands. As always, many thanks for your excellent photos of beautiful hats.

cool! thanks for that info. I wasn't sure if they tacked it down with glue... it does indeed use small tack stitches to tack everything down. fortunately the slight dark staining is not as noticeable in person. for some reason it shows more in photos.
