The strap slips onto the grommets & is removable. But be careful to ensure that the strap is compatible with the grommets. I found that leather Akubra straps weren't compatible with David Morgan grommets for example, calling for a work-around. I couldn't simply use David Morgan straps because... -

If the hat came with a pair of vent holes on each side of the crown, then you could use them to lace the thong through. Similar to shoe laces. -

Personally I wouldn't think twice about picking up a good quality brand new fur felt hat with a 2-1/2" brim width & 5-1/2" crown height at that price point. I would gladly tolerate the existing crown bash. Having said that, it is often possible with the aid of steam & brushing to re-configure... -

Well I guess that's one way to acquire a Campdraft in Sand or Mid-Brown or both. I'm tempted to order one in Mid-Brown but that color doesn't look much different from Stetson "Bark". I already have a Gun Club Catera in Bark sporting a thin ribbon thus resembling the Campdraft look. -
