Zinsser's shellac is a great product used by fountain pen restorers in its liquid canned formulation. It's pure shellac diluted with ethyl & isopropyl alcohols.
Do note per the MSDS sheet from the Zinsser (Rustoleum) site that there are additional chemicals contained in the spray can version...
Also consider a rodeo string. Similar to a 2-piece chin strap, instead of using grommet hooks the rodeo strings simply sit inside the sweat band attached to cotter pins. Both of these make use of slits in the sweat band near the hat body for access purposes. The long thongs probably partake...
The strap slips onto the grommets & is removable.
But be careful to ensure that the strap is compatible with the grommets. I found that leather Akubra straps weren't compatible with David Morgan grommets for example, calling for a work-around. I couldn't simply use David Morgan straps because...
I read today in a 1905 work respecting handling of hats, that the above formula actually generates the UK size. To attain the US size the result must be bumped up by 1/8.
Thus the previously calculated result of 7-3/8 is the UK size of the hat; the US size is 7-1/2 with the addition of the...
Nice hat at a great price!

These are apparently close-out hats.
For 45 bucks personally I'd pick one up regardless of the crown bash style & even if I'd prefer a wider brim than the listed 2-3/8".
According to the seller in response to a question: " ... I did measure the inside of the band. From front to back is aprox 8" and from side to side is aprox 6.5".
I think it might have been alanfgag who posted an approximatation formula for ascertaining hat size being the addition of the...
carouselvic I very much appreciate the old photos which you post here.
I find it interesting that so many of the old-timers sported wide-brimmed hats, they must have known something about protection from the sun & the various elements.
Well I guess that's one way to acquire a Campdraft in Sand or Mid-Brown or both.
I'm tempted to order one in Mid-Brown but that color doesn't look much different from Stetson "Bark". I already have a Gun Club Catera in Bark sporting a thin ribbon thus resembling the Campdraft look.
