The Tiger Bay Area of Cardiff is the first truly multicultural area of a British city in that its scale of migration, number of languages, religious diversity and level of integration. In particular it is the oldest Black community of any size, with immigrants from the Caribbean and Africa (West...
They have 'Black Welsh' - a name that conjures up images of Shirley Bassey and Cardiff's Tiger Bay district. It looks dark brown, much darker than my 'Peat Brown' Woolly Pully. Their 'Charcoal' looks darker than Charcoal wool sweaters I have had from Barbour.
That looks very nice. It closely resembles a Barbour jumper I’ve had for years. I hadn’t been aware of OKW’s chunky crew neck because I’ve been so focussed on their Woolly Pullies!
SWC is really a ‘cottage industry’ and they have suffered a lot during the pandemic. It’s also in a very depressed area of the UK. I hope the firm survives and with it the hand knitted sweaters.
I checked this morning and found that the website for SWC was no longer listed, as Steve said. Before I email Peter, has anyone else done so and if you have, what happened?
I had my first Woolly Pully aged 11: it was Army Green and I soon bought matching Navy and RAF Blue versions. Woolly Pullies have been my ‘go to’ sweater ever since then.
We also wore them in the Corps at school: again in my case Army but several friends of mine chose the RAF section.
I wasn’t really academic at all until
I got into the sixth form at school (last 2 years: 16-18 for US readers). However I also had to go on playing Rugby through my sixth form years which was a mixed blessing.
Lincolnshire’s a really interesting county which is too often underrated.
We also too often forget that the sweater we usually call the Submariner is equally associated with the RAF (and even the RFC before that).
Have you any experience of the RAF Woolly Pully? I wear mine quite often (I have...
That sounds a great idea!!! My interest in itching powder goes back to my boarding school days, when it was a useful weapon.
I think you said you ended up in Norfolk because your father was in the RAF? It is known for being a beautiful county. Norwich is also known for its university...
I know Suffolk reasonably well but I’m ashamed to say I have never been to Norwich; it’s a terrible omission as I am quite well travelled both in the UK and abroad. Several friends have told me that I would really like it. I live on the SW edge of London having lived in central London most of my...
Second hand can work as a good ‘shabby chic’ look. I have some very old Norwegian wool sweaters that have a similar effect - as well as a couple of hand knitted ones from Peru and Ecuador.
Itching powder. ... painful, yet strangely alluring. I remember using it for practical jokes on the other chaps at school and college ... and getting it in return.
I have by coincidence today been wearing my Navy Submariner sweater from Peter Christian. I shall save my white one from TW...

There are two male political leaders I wish she would say this to, one British, one American. Both have freaky hair-dos and delusions of grandeur (or folie de grandeur: it sounds better, and more damning, in French).
Most readers will know who I mean. ...
Oh, dear. ...
Over here in Brexitland the feminist movement has (almost 100%) become ultra-conservative and lily white. The main impetus for our equivalent of ‘bathroom bills’ comes from feminists, who are extremely willing these days to form ‘coalitions’ with the far right. They are also...
It has been perfect weather for Woolly Pullies over the past few weeks - I have worn a WP or a Guernsey sweater every single day. Long may it continue!
