The Alexander Leathers website has gone live.
The jackets look good, and the introductory prices are keen. I'm liking the Nebraska and Four Pocket Roadster.
Were I to order up a new Aero, it would likely be in Cherry. It's more of a burgundy than it appears on the website, and it ages up beautifully.
There are some photos on page three of the What's wrong with cherry FQHH thread. And if you Google for images of Aero Cherry FQHH you'll find a bunch...
Aero had a prototype for Evisu on their sales page that is entirely lined with corduroy. It might be worth asking Holly whether it was deemed to be practical.
I suspect that one of the lighter fleece jackets, such as a B6 or D1, would be more practical as a day-to-day wear.
It looks like the UK is about to get snowed in, so you might get a little more wear out of it yet. :)
At this point I'm just looking, but I suspect that I'll be getting a reproduction unless I find an enormous original. Mk Vb had one up for sale in November, so they do exist. I'm a similar height and weight to him, which is going to make things tricky.
Thanks Andrew, that answered my question. I was trying to figure out if they'd be too warm for a British winter. If yours gets regular wear then apparently not.
How warm are Irvins?
I'm under the impression that they'll roast you alive in anything less than subzero temperatures, but was wondering if anyone could confirm. How well do they work as a winter coat in somewhere like the UK?
Thanks.
That looks like the Gieves and Hawkes Admiral Coat in Cashmere. And if not, it's a very similar style.
If you've got a spare £750 (about $1200, but you'd avoid $200 of VAT) then go and order one up from the UK before they sell out of your size. Which is very likely as stocks are low, and...
Nice looking jacket there Worf, and the pipe is especially important in getting the look right.
If you're after suggestions for number three...
Spitfire, I saw your Aces High Irvin on another forum, and that's giving me serious jacket acquisition syndrome. :(
Incidentally, how wearable are...
I'm not a vintage flying jacket fanatic, but from what little I do know there are inaccuracies in Aero's reproductions of the A1 and A2. But I do prefer the leather they use over Eastman's.
My guess is that Aero got the nod because they're big enough to be able to outfit the principles (and...
I haven't seen the parka, but the Nigel Cabourn / Aero Sleeping Bag Jacket is similar, and is a gorgeous thing. It's on sale now, at a mere £2100 if you want to spend even more.
Glad to help.
That Monarch is a pretty cool jacket. I like the fly-fronted button fastening, and the way they've blocked the colours is a lot better than some of the other examples.
Worf, what you need is a Gerbing heated liner for the half belt. That'll keep the leather warm and flexible.
Just make sure you don't run out of charge halfway home...
It's not quite as simple as that.
Kangaroo is the strongest leather for a given thickness, but the marsupials are quite thin skinned. Cowhide is weaker, but comes in heavier weights, meaning it wins overall.
A lot of motorbike racers use kangaroo leather suits because they can be lighter for a...
The Red Wing Heritage / Classic Work range is made in the US. I've got a pair of the Beckmans in Black Cherry, and they feel pretty solid.
Whites, Wesco and Viberg offer similar boots to Red Wing, but made to a much higher standard, and often with a correspondingly higher price tag. A...
Joel, the light russet / dark seal goat combo should work well. The russet is quite red, which is better than the more brown tones of some of the horsehides, the grain looks similar, and there's enough difference between the shades to get a nice contrast, whilst the hue is complimentary.
I...
I'm wondering how different the standard (LHJ103) and dark (LHJ105) seal brown leathers are in hue.
In combination they could give a much more subtle two-tone effect.
