I've bought 1 custom hat that was ordered in person at the booth in OKC from Shorty's Caboy Hattery.
All the others, from 5 different custom hatters, have been via long distance = phone & email.
The one in person was no better fitting or better experience than those done remotely.

No telling because for US hatters the beaver fur pelts have to travel to Europe to be processed with Winchester getting bales of beaver fur back to make into felt bodies. Fepsa gets to make them there then ship to US hatters. She does get the benefit of skipping this last trip across the pond...

Open crown for most vintage Flagships/Whippets would be 5 1/2". On customs, I like to order 5 5/8" or 5 3/4" open crown.

The ATL Hat Squad are given a hat with their first solved homicide.
Most then go buy themselves one to wear & keep the initial one as a memento.
They do get straw ones for the warmer months too.
