https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/stetson-open-road-quality-designation-project.54092/page-4 They're different grade levels, and "on paper" the 3x is the "nicer" hat. The 3x hats seem to be routinely nice.

Art Fawcett VS Hall of Fame

Wow. Glad to hear your cancer was caught early, Art! Sending best wishes for continued good health. Hopefully I can squeeze one more of your hats out of my budget this year!

    Justified FX Hat

Coincidentally, I had a delivery two blocks away from Golden Gate Western Wear, so I dropped in. Probably just after you called! I only admired it from across the counter, though. I do like my Knudsen/Stetson Boss of the Plains if that's any help.

    Justified FX Hat

The DIY tool is this brim cutter: https://www.amazon.com/M-F-Western-Brim-Cutter/dp/B00P7ANIU2 It cuts like this: The smaller of the two will cut off 1/8" at a time. As far as "worth it" that's really up to you. The Knudsen will probably be slightly better than an off the rack Stetson in...

Well, it's not "overall" better if one of your determining factors for "accuracy" is going to be felt composition. If we're asking which is higher quality felt, all other things being equal, the beaver blend. I don't know for sure what kinds of innards are in the Everyman or in the Garrison, but...

...ok, I was merely trying to answer which was better "quality wise" which is what you asked. I am not a hatter, so this is just the opinion of someone who has looked at a lot of Indy hats online. But I'm not of the opinion that you need a rabbit felt to have a "screen accurate" hat. I think...

OTHER THAN eBAY Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

So, the Hat Gods do not want me to have a black straw hat. Last April, I attempted to order a black Tesi from Bencraft. It was kind of a last minute impulse buy for a trip to New Orleans. I paid extra for 2-day shipping, however, due to inclement weather in the northeast, the hat took a week to...

Most custom hats should be better than an off the rack Christy's or Fed IV. Other than that, other variables come into play (beaver/rabbit, etc) Penman is high quality, but if money were no object, I'd cough up the extra dough for the Portuguese beaver felt. I believe HJ is also using FEPSA...

I encountered this when shipping back my stupid Worth and Worth hat...both ups and USPS wanted north of $60 for shipping. Larger boxes aren't "machinable" according to USPS, so the cost is higher.

    In praise of newer Stetson

The excellent quality felt is the best Stetson/Hatco has produced in some years. Sounds like you got a good deal, enjoy your new hat!

IMHO, Herbert Johnson's repro is the new king of Indy hats...to my eye, the block shape matches the Raiders hat the best out of any maker, Penman included. https://www.swaineadeneybrigg.com/collections/herbert-johnson

Ask a question, get an answer

Hi DM, What material is your hat made of? You will probably have a tough time re-shaping a wool felt hat, which are shaped with pressure and steam. Not impossible per se, but wool is harder to work with than fur felt. Do you have a picture of the top of the crown you are trying to modify? It...

Opinions welcome, maybe I'm overreacting? My overpriced black friday Worth and Worth hat arrived and I was supremely underwhelmed. I expected to not be impressed with the weave count (I understood this purchase to be as much about the artistic work put into the hat as much as the hat itself)...

Custom made hats from Cappelleria Melegari

Right, what I'm saying though is that you paid for a custom sized product that was sized inappropriately. Since the mistake is on the manufacturer, one would think that they would at least be amenable to re-installing a correctly sized sweatband. You wouldn't be returning the product for a...

Custom made hats from Cappelleria Melegari

Did you contact them after you received the hat? Even though you cannot return the item for a refund, if something is offered as custom sized to fit, and does not fit, the maker should rectify.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Well, my heather grey Black Sheep has what Bob calls "scorch" finish. I always assumed that involved fire, because, scorch....duh. Starting with the long hair felt: Ending up as:
