Our house in Vermont, built in 1970 to replace an older one that burned the winter before, is redolant with that late-midcentury faux colonial stuff. I kinda like it, but my wife detests it and we've been slowly stripping it away and going for a sort of pseudo late-'40s look. "Buy Centennial," I...
That's a great answer Just Jim. I had a publisher contact me a while ago wanting me to write assigned pieces for them and I could smell that being trouble for me. I can whip up short pieces on any topic, no problem, but a book is a whole different animal and level of commitment.
Well, I wasn't expecting to click on the "Vintage Roadside" thread and to find myself in the midst of a discussion of Nutter Butters, but to connect them both, I'll say that I once (ok, maybe thrice) had a special Blizzard from that paragon of Roadside America, Dairy Queen, that used Nutter...
Wasn't head protection one of the motivations behind the bowler's development? Protection for gamekeepers against poachers and low-hanging branches, or somesuch?
Picking nits here, but unless the side trim was changed, that's a 1954 Chevrolet 210. The pricier Bel Air has a contrasting panel on the flanks. Personally, I prefer the 210.

A couple things spring to mind. The same type of hybrid drive as used on cars today like the Toyota Prius was available on the 1912 Rambler Cross Country (it's the battery technology that has improved over the past century).
I also am fascinated that the Army had turbocharged fighter planes in...
I've ridden in his car and was quite comfortable as a passenger, but you're correct, there was no way I (at 6'1") was going to be able to drive it. The '23, thankfully, is less cramped than a '26-'27, and we will set up the cockpit ergonomics for me rather than for him.
Also, the details on...
Clayton is a good friend of mine and a fellow Barnstormer. He's actually going to build the chassis for my car, after which I will handle the body and interior.
Just remembered this. Evolution of a dream:
From when I had my '26 touring car body that I planned to power with a 1928 Chevrolet four-cylinder.
From after my buddies gave me a '23 body to replace the '26, which I had to sell in a move.
To the current plan, which is back to the hinged...
The Bold Look suits make me look like a Film Noir heavy and I don't care for it (they might work better now that I've lost a bit of weight). They look good on some guys, though, and I have nothing generally against them. When I wore suits on the regular, I was a bigger fan of the "Mister T" look...
Just today I came across the phrase "Soconyland," in relation to Socony/Socony-Vacuum promotional activities in the 1920s and '30s. There was even a radio program!
Wait, radio? Vintage gas stations? I'll bet I know who to ask about this...
So, @LizzieMaine , what can you tell us about Soconyland?
