Last week I got a couple of M51 repros in the mail.
One parka is branded Unilets, made in China, and the design and materials are the same as Houston (Japan) and Rothco (US) so the factory is probably doing their own knock-offs or something. This one is civilianized and not an accurate repro...
"Streets Of Fire", a Walter Hill film from the early 1980s, billed as an action/musical. I picked this up on dvd several months ago but didn't get around to watching it until a couple nights ago. I loved it!! Okay, it's flawed in some ways, but there are some great scenes, and Hill (and his...
^ That's a pretty wild parka! Thanks for posting. I was looking through my saved images and found a vintage M51 that had a tag with UK/Canadian sizes on it, which was odd, but then I realized that the US Army probably provided equipment and clothing to other UN forces in Korea.
There was also a story, which I think I posted here, that Chris Evans, that obnoxious British tv presenter, had bought the coat and then destroyed it when he crashed his motorcycle or something. I doubt, given the low budget of the film, that there was more than one coat; it's not like they had...
I think for a tailor or skilled seamstress making a Withnail coat wouldn't be too hard of an undertaking. I think one could start with a pattern for a priest's cassock, which is similar, and make modifications. Or, patterns do exist for old 18th and 19th century coats and whatnot, so start with...
I've got one of those too, formerly from a WO2 in "2nd company", which I've worn a few times on my walks. The buttons are Grenadier Guards. I kept the buttons but then I'm not in England so nobody knows or cares. I agree the length is great and it's very well made, although mine has a few minor...
I live in Ontario too, same as Mister Cairo, and I've never had a problem with moths. I've only rarely come across used coats with moth damage, and then only small bites to the nap. It must not be a "thing" here, for whatever reasons.
The odd seams up the front show up in the photo you posted, so I guess they're original. Which is really odd, since I usually associate seams like that with women's coats, to provide more shaping in the upper torso area (for obvious reasons).
Definitely heavily re-tailored at some point since those seams up the front are bizarre and there's no way they were original. Civilian buttons. I agree with others that the "bones" look military. The long rear box pleat with the triangle stitching at the top is something you commonly see on...
haha, yeah you're gonna get so much use from the white version (cough cough tan nomex cough cough)
