Google "Clinton Anderson" the Downunder Horsemanship guy. His signature look is a chocolate western.
His catalog is full of models with dark brown western hats.
I've met him a few times & this guy is never not wearing a long sleeved button down shirt & starched & pressed Wranglers....
Thanks. That is called the "rake" of the crease. You may hear some reference to "tugboat" shape too...
Thanks Harv. I was supposed to get that prototype back after sending it back to HatCo after eval but never did...[huh]
Those lame pins of actual Stratoliner planes came on the Royal Stetson version of the modern HatCo Stetson Stratoliner...they are horrendous to be kind...
I snap the brim down all the way around then work on working the backside back up leaving the front side swooped down.
On the initial prototype...

I've got 2 Premiere Strats & both shaped dry, never had to use any steam.
Size is also about symmetry.
Think of distance from brim to your chin & brim to the top of the crown.
The thing of a Premiere Strat is the dimensions of a bygone era, may take some adjusting to.
I know of lots of folks...
Yep, I've read Fire in the Hole & other shorts by Elmore Leonard that introduced Raylan Givens plus book Raylan he wrote afterwards. The Open Road is the hat as he described it, kind that ranch owners wore...the character also wore suits different from what TO wears, lots of creative license...
I have an Akubra Zephyr that I use on golf course as well as on the tractor mowing all summer.
It is poly-straw & fears no rain. I have had & gone thru quite a few palm leaf hats but they are heavy & don't breathe that well.
My favorite knock-about hat is a VS ArtLite, vented with liner...

Once you reshape the brim (if just wetting it), hit it with a good dose of steam to set the shape & reactivate the shellac.
May not need stiffener after it cools....

I have one of the VS Nutria blends as my hunting/camping/hiking hat = real tough, rugged but nice felt.
I also have an ArtLite natural, undyed beaver that is vented for my warmer weather "using" hat.
Either one can take all I can give it...
