Hey - that's pretty cool. But I suspect there were a few more working piers (and a few less tall buildings) in 1940. Do you mind if I use that edited photo as my avatar?
All offices are different, I suppose. I've spent my career in management consulting and in banking in the US. A black suit with a gray shirt and a brightly colored tie would not be considered appropriate business attire. So, on the internet, when I don't know people's situation, I'd recommend...
Took my new Akubra Campdraft (from the EA sale) on the open road - here we are waiting on a connection at DTW. I tried a couple fedora bashes on this last night but I prefer a cattleman bash on this hat.
It's aesthetic. A black suit is inappropriate for business wear (navy, charcoal, and mid-gray should make up your business wardrobe), and the high contrast is not flattering in daylight - it washes out your complexion. Also, invariably, they look cheap.
I'd have two general rules:
1) A gray hat goes with any suit that isn't a warm brown tone.
2) Never wear a black suit, unless it's a dinner suit, and it's after 6pm.
BIN'ed this early to mid-sixties Cavanagh on eBay last week. $20, plus $11 shipping. It's mid-brown, with a creamy gold liner and a black ribbon. The felt isn't as soft as my 50s Cavanagh, but I think that's because this hat appears never to have been worn or handled.
I don't know who...
I got a Campdraft in Bluegrass. With that, my two Optimos, an eBay Cavanagh, and my custom campaign hat that I'm in the queue for with Mike at Northwest hats, I think my allotment for 2017 is complete. Going to have to sell off a few hats in the coming weeks.
I have a size 42 vintage brown Vanson AZ2 (Comp weight) in great shape with a pile liner in never used condition. Talon zips should place it prior to mid-eighties.
I bought it here a few weeks ago for a great deal. I think $215. I'll sell it for whatever I bought it for plus $20 for...
I started playing with my Cavanagh on a conference call today. It has the most pliable felt so it's a real treat to play with. On the way to work, I wore it as I usually do, center crease, deep dents.
But at work, I started thinking about how I am going to crease my new campaign hat and...
First Cub Scout Pack meeting this school year last night. We had about 15 new recruits, and only 5 kids bridged to Boy Scouts, so we'll have about 60 kids in the pack this year. The hat could use some improvement though - which is why I am in the queue for a 100% beaver campaign hat from Mike...
No, me neither! But maybe I can work "up" to it. I do love the photo because it shows such varied creases and, it being 1913, you'd have to assume that most of these boys got the hats ex-Army and that they'd have had these creases when they got them. I doubt they were going to the store...
I prefer 5th, 4th, 2nd myself. 3rd is a bit too perfect - looks a little stiff and prebashed to me - almost like a modern hat. I couldn't pull off #2 myself, but if my dad were a rancher and my mom was the Wicked Witch of the east...it's a pretty cool bash. I can't decide whether to ask Mike...
Just placed an order for a M1911-based Campaign Hat from Mike at Northwest Hatters.
It will be based on the dimensions of the Spec. 1145 (Jan 2, 1912), but will incorporate the improvements of the Spec. 1177 (April 10, 1913), so in short:
- 100% Beaver in a Pecan dress felt
- 5 1/2" crown
- 3"...
