I've heard the claim that machine sewing a sweatband will "tear up" the felt. This has not been the case for me. Granted, the dedicated sweatband machine does take some fine tuning to set up properly. Thread gauge, thread tension, attachment spacing, and feed dog height all have to be spot on...
I'm happy you revived this old thread Jack. Being an old leather guy I especially enjoy seeing the old leather bands from that era. I'm also blown away by those beautiful old conchos in all their patinaed glory. I'd never presume to tell a man what to do with his conchos, but I like those just...
This is partly based on my personal experience with cheap wool hats that require a welted brim to hold any kind of shape at all, but also largely based on my own personal preference regarding the treatment as a whole. To me that brim treatment looks cheap even on finely made hats. It's a bias...
Some time ago I took a commission for two "The Son" hats. It was my first attempt at bound, pencil curled brims so I had some trepidation, but the fact that the brother in Illinois was buying identical hats for himself and his brother in Arizona clinched the deal. I can always get behind some...
The flu pandemic of 1918?
Infected a third of the world's population and killed an estimated 50 million people.
With no vaccine to protect against influenza infection and no antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections that can be associated with influenza infections, control efforts...
I say go for it bb. If done properly, the results are well worth the effort. Here's a brief pictorial from the past showing the process I use. Hot pan, 5 or 6 drops of coconut oil, luring pad. I use a hat spinner when applying, but steady even strokes should get you where you want to be...
HatBlocksPoland on Etsy. There you will find the downturn flange block you're looking for. Something like this except you'll want to order it with a different crown block. There are shortcuts to proper hat making. Try them if you wish...until you wish you hadn't. The problem with shortcuts is...
It's truly a nice, densely felted hat body. A little too thick and a little too stiff, however, I'm looking forward to beating the hell out of this one to see what can be accomplished.
Greetings all. I decided it was time to dump the old free email account in favor of a paid service through my website domain. The new email address is: rick@phoenixhatcompany.com
Sorry for all the inconvenience and missed communications. Stay safe and healthy!
All is well here Brent and Robie and I appreciate your concern. I've been having trouble receiving some emails after I upgraded to Windows 10. I'm working on the problem, but nobody has been able to figure it out. For now it's best just to pm me here. With just a month into my "semi-retirement"...
Returning to open crown on an appropriate hat block and ironing out the previous crease lines is preferable, especially on newer, factory blocked hats, however, vintages felts can usually be reshaped just fine without re-blocking with perhaps only a bit of steam and patience.
BE SURE to at least...
