I need to practice shaping hats, so I picked up a Reich "Aspenvelour" at the flea market earlier today. I know nothing about it (other than the German name and label), but it was good practice, on an inexpensive hat.
2 inch snap brim, about a 4.5 inch finished crown. Attached are photos of...
Forest green "Reich Alpenvelour".
Flea market find for 10 bucks, earlier today. I would guess from the 1960's, but I'm new at hats, so I am probably wrong! The felt was good, but the hat was badly bashed down. I converted it to an open crown, then reshaped it to a teardrop. Took me about 1.5...
I haven't read this entire thread, but the HBO show "Boardwalk Empire" is like stepping back into hat and vintage manly wear heaven. I started watching the show on Amazon Prime recently, and I am hooked, just looking at the awesome hats! The show is based in Atlantic City, during the Prohibition...
Well, I'm glad to be encouraged that I didn't screw up and bid on a total dog of a hat!
I have a nice steamer that the wife used in the past for steaming wrinkles out of garments. So, I think that I will take the hat back to a full crown, then try my hand at a teardrop crease, and wear it as a...
Yeah, I just started looking at photos from that era, after being a surprise winner, nd couldn't find the exact hat, as it said nothing inside the heat to indicate what it might be. I figured it was some type of OR "cousin".
I won an auction hat on a whim tonight.
It looks looks like about a 3 inch brim Stetson, sold by the Morris Men's shop at the Chicago Stockyard Inn. There was no detail given by the seller, so I took a chance and put in a low bid. The rest is history, for good or bad!
Does anybody know...
I'm not much of a fighter.....
Here is a new Bailey Perry, olive mix. It also just arrived today. A decent hat, but not even close to being in the same league, quality-wise, as the old Dobbs that also arrived today. Unless I decide on a new Akubra, I think that I will stick with vintage in...
LOL! I'm sure that one is in my future! Can't buy too many hats too quickly, or the wife might start questioning my sanity (or what may be left of it!).
Dobbs "Game Bird", in suede leather. I bought it mainly to see what size I need, before getting some "nicer" felt and straw hats . This particular 6 7/8 fits me nicely!
Do those of you who have tried on, or wear a vintage Adam hat(s) find that they are true to size, or do they run large/small? I am interested in a 50's Adam up for auction, but it is a 6 3/4, and I normally wear a 6 7/8.
Thanks for any insight!
LOL. Compared to my sons, my brother, uncles, and cousins, I have always been the "little one". I never considered myself to be a "bigger guy"! In any event, I don't think that 2.5 inches is a "wide" brim. Anything over 2.75"-3" is wide, to my mind.
Why a larger brim? My old waxed cotton hat brim that I am wearing above is just 2 inches wide. How wide is the brim on your avatar hat? Thanks for the quick reply!
