Again, I point out the fact that I got this trick from working in theatre where we paint shoes for shows all the time. Often for musicals in which they dance more in one night than you'll dance all year. So it isn't untested. I merely hesitate to tell everyone that this will never crack...
It's fairly durable. I won't say that it won't do any of those things, but I haven't had it happen to me yet. These very shoes were worn out and about in NYC on a couple of occasions, and they look the same as when I painted them (fyi NYC is ROUGH on shoes). Also, I have used this for theatrical...
I'll have to look into the Esquire book. Definitely something I need to brush up on. Also something that I think there would be a demand for a more up to date publication. Ever thought about publishing your own book.
You should be able to strip that paint with acetone if you want to keep those around. Wear gloves because you'll be wetting your rag pretty well for something that involved.
It was requested in the suit forum that I create a thread detailing my conversion of a simple pair of thrift store wing tips, to a stylish pair of two-tone kicks. As many of you know, it is growing more and more difficult to find a nice pair of two-tone shoes anymore, and even more so if you...
I realize that. I did say the buttonfly could be a style choice. I was just throwing that out there just like I was throwing out the label suggestion.
Fascinating information in this thread though. Especially Marc's bit about the German retro-style tailoring. Where do you learn so much about...
Unfortunately I was, and still am, away from home, so my accessories were limited to what I could get in a hurry. My personal stash is several hundred miles away, though not quite as extensive as I might like.
Still looking for the perfect fedora though. I'm truly a bowler man myself, but I...
Hello Rude-y. I AM wearing braces as a matter of fact. The tabs are white leather, so they blend in with the shirt. I also unbuttoned the suit for the picture. The ensemble itself was a bit rushed as I didn't find the suit until 3 days before the function, so the hat didn't come through as I had...
I zeroed in on the buttonfly. Buttonfly could be a style choice, but could also help date it. Zippers didn't start being introduced in men's trousers until the early to mid 20s in England and the US and didn't really gain momentum in usage until the mid 30s.
This could very well be 20s...
The short answer to the armhole question: Off the rack suits have a generic armhole (armscye). This is to accommodate not only differing shoulder sizes, but where your shoulder is located on your body (further front, further back). When you have a suit tailored to fit YOU, the tailor doesn't...
Makes perfect sense. I spent summers in college working in a theatrical costume shop as a patternmaker and sometimes tailor, and most of what I kept around were very basic slopers that I would then make a muslin jacket mockup out of. The mockup was always roomy, and I pinned, drew on, cut, and...
Have a thrift store near me. Most people that care about clothes don't visit it because of its shady locale, but I do and they have suits for days. Went thumbing through the suits the other day and ran across a very nice mid-fifties 2-piece. Pleated trousers, navel high waist. Nice charcoal...
Thanks! And I realize the suit and tie are from different periods, but they looked good together, and truthfully, I fell in love with both the suit and the tie, so I made them friends. :D
The shoes I actually picked up in a thrift store for $8 bucks and two-toned them myself with some...
I have a couple reproduction Victorian suits as well as custom made but this past week I decided I needed a vintage suit to wear to opening night of Finian's Rainbow on Broadway. The show is set in 1947, so I felt it would be appropriate to dress the part.
Found this beautiful piece in one of...
I actually did teach myself how to tailor, although I did have extensive experience as a cutter draper and dressmaker beforehand, so tailoring was simply an extension of a skillset I already possessed. A skillset which took many years to develop. It took a few suits to get a handle on making...
Hey all. Chris here and vintage is my job... Sort of. I'm a professional costume designer and vintage enthusiast. Found this forum awhile back while researching for a 30s show. Nearly forgot about it until my mentor asked me to google our friend and colleague Savoia the tailor's new store...
I'm inclined to agree. I think it looks wonderful when you can see the top of the vest peering out over the neckline of the jacket. This was especially popular from the turn of the century through the teens and I'm sure appeared throughout the 20s and 30s as well.
Notice the man at the far...
