Thank you for the notes on Akubra. As I’m so new to fedoras in general, what are some favored alternatives? I do love my Stetson’s, but I’m surely willing to explore. Also, please school me on vintage (I won’t say bespoke! :) ) Where does one get started in looking for vintage hats? Classifieds...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Stetson Chatham Royal Deluxe in Caribou. My first "real" fedora! (and likely to gain a sibling very soon due to the rapid onset of addiction...) :p

Well, it will come as a surprise to nobody, but I'm already considering my next fedora. :D As mentioned above, while I don't consider my fedoras "work hats," I do use them as a lifestyle accessory, like a jacket, gloves, etc... Therefore, I can see my fedoras as largely replacing my cowboy hats...

This is a good point; I do this on my cowboy hats, often forgetting they are even there.

Perhaps a goofy question on my part, but do you tape in the front and back or the sides of the band? Or does it just depend?

Great suggestions, and I completely agree about the umbrella, or a hat specifically designed to handle downpours. I am definitely a "function over form" type with most things, and especially with hats. I do like to take care of them but they must serve a function- cover from the sun, warmth...

Thanks for your response. I'm consistently a 7 3/8, 59 in my Stetsons and other hats. I won't have an extreme haircut but it will trim down a bit. This new Chatham fits remarkably well and I think a little reduction tape will cover me to take up any slack. By the way, is there a favored...

I suppose I may be peppering this forum with a lot of questions in the short term. Thanks for indulging me... Is it okay to use Bickmore Gard-More on my new Chatham? We haven't had any snow or substantial rain (unseasonably dry here in the White Mountains) but I'd like to know if I can put a...

General question- as with my other wool or felt hats, after general perspiration and wear, they will get a little tighter from time to time (easily fixed with a hat jack). Can I assume fur felt Fedoras will also? I ask because I'm going to get a haircut next week and I can tell the hat will be a...

Thanks! I already sense the signs of addiction setting in... I thought I could control it with my cowboy hats and Irish caps. Now I've opened a whole lot bigger Pandora hat box!

Here is my beautiful Chatham Royal Deluxe- it just arrived today! I'm quite pleased with how handsome the hat is. I don't have any other Fedoras to which I can compare it, but the felt feels very nice- it's appropriately stiff, but soft and flexible. It snaps nicely. It's safe to say this is...

I looked at that website when I was preparing to make my decision- it is a great resource! Thank you for sharing!

I will definitely post images when I receive the Chatham. The Caribou color seems quite popular and I'm excited to see it in person- the images on the internet show it anywhere from light grey to graphite in color. I hope it's a darker grey.

Thank you DH. I've got a "Chatham Royal Deluxe" (according to Amazon) fur felt in Caribou arriving tomorrow. I'm very excited to see it and try it on. I don't live anywhere near a hat store but I'm sure the next time I'm around one, I'll take a look to compare to the Stratoliner and any others I...

I ended up ordering a Stetson Chatham in Caribou. How is the overall stiffness compared to something like the Temple or Stratoliner?

This has undoubtedly been asked, but I couldn't find an answer with a cursory look. How does the Stetson Chatham compare to the Stratoliner or Saxon or Temple in terms of felt stiffness? Is the Chatham flexible and soft or stiff?

I picked up a couple more Irish caps this week- I love them because they are lightweight, and they are great to wear even in high mountain windy conditions. These two new additions are a combination of tweed barleycorn and herringbone. But, as I do like a bit of a brim to block the sun (when I'm...

    Western, anyone?

I trust the woman (first mistake? :) ) who suggested the steam remedy, and to be fair, I probably just used too much glue. But I've given some thought to the wide ribbon solution, a course of action I may indeed take... Where would I pick up a wide black ribbon for this?

    Western, anyone?

DD- you did a fantastic job. I'm concerned about losing too much beaver/felt, but I'll check with Stetson too. I suppose I could even use a black marker, to cover some of the glue- at least the part that extends above the original felt band. But we'll see. I don't want to ruin the hat.
