This is more generally about reshaping Hats than it is the Open Road.
I’ve recently gotten “brave enough“ to reshape some of my hats. I typically like a western look, but I have found that I do not like the cattlemen crease as it sits slightly too high on my head. I like more of an open crown...
Who here wears their felt hat all four seasons?
We're coming up on time for straw/palm leaf/hemp, but who has a hat that works for them regardless of the temps?
I'm talking fedoras of all types and cowboy hats.
Does a higher X count (ie more beaver) allow for comfortable multi season wear...
Thank you. I'm having trouble opening that link for some reason but will continue to try.
As far as sizing, do the molds correspond to the hat size? For example, I'm a 7 3/8; would I get a 7 3/8 hat shaper if I want to open the crown?
I just did an Atwood palm using water and a plastic kid's...
Where do I find simple molds to make open crowns of my palm leaf and fur felt hats?
I know I can use soft balls or any sort of hard round object, but where can I get reliable molds for the task?
I'm wearing my Open Road 6X in Silverbelly today.
With cooling temps and cloudy skies of late, I'd been wearing my OR Royal Deluxe in Sage. But a mild, sunny fall afternoon called for the classic Silverbelly!
I use Bickmore light and dark for my hat cleaners; white brush for Silverbelly and dark brush for Black.
What do I use for my Sage Open Road Royal Deluxe? Dark cleaner and dark brush? A dedicated orange hat sponge?
Has anyone put a different band on their Stetson Open Road, pre or post 1970? I've got a modern 6X in silver belly and am curious about a horsehair band, something to every so slightly provide contrast.
Maybe this is an Open Road sin to do so, but before I commit such a potentially heinous act...
This could go in the Open Road forum, or even Western, Anyone? but it's more about material than anything.
I'm evaluating my Open Roads in 6X (Silver belly) and Royal Deluxe (Sage). They are both sharp as can be.
My question is about breathability. The 6X (somehow) seems to breathe better; it...
I'm waiting for the Stetson Open Road Royal Deluxe in sage. I already love my OR in 6X (I really like the western felt) and I'm quite certain the RD texture will also suit me.
*Update- I received the wrong hat in the mail- a Stetson Stratoliner in sage. But oh boy, what a beauty! It's not what...
Rumor also has it that it’s a ribbon skull and bones, to forewarn the wearer that mercury may have been used in the formation of the hat. “Mad as a hatter...”
Jack- what is the felt like on the BOTP? More western, or more Royal?
I am starting my research on the BOTP as I love the open crown and flat brim. Doing an internet search comes back with lots of hats with varying creases and punches.
I received a couple of emails directly from John in March of this year. He responded to my inquiries regarding a few of their flat caps (I have two tweed and one linen). He seemed like a very genuine person and it was a shock to learn of his passing in May. I'm glad the family business lives on...
Is there a trick to evening out the cattleman's crease? The two top "ridges" are often slightly uneven (one higher than the other by about an 1/8"). If this is common with all Open Roads, I can let it go. But I've got a touch of OCD when it comes to shaping my hats.
