I long for when I have room in my bedroom for a vanity table... it would be completely magical to liberate my makeup from the under-sink storage of our bathroom and my husband would love to get his bathroom back too.

Also I think vanity tables are beautiful, especially with nice-looking mirrors.

Additionally I was informed rather icily once that vanity tables were "obsolete in modern homes" ahem, maybe if you have a few enormous bathrooms, but manifestly not if you have only one and it is of ordinary size! Nobody wants to form a queue while the lady of the house curls her eyelashes!

Whoever said vanities were obsolete obviously didn't have a vision problem. I don't know how many things I tried to help me see myself as I did my makeup and hair. Sitting at my vanity table beats the heck out of sitting on top of the bathroom counter with my nose up against the mirror.

^ Very pretty, Antje!

I don't have a powder or dressing room. I have my own bathroom and I just use that counter space for all my loot. I always do my hair and makeup standing up, too. I'll have to take a photo of my oh-so-glamorous counter setup.

I want a vanity table so much! Our bedrrom is tiny, but we are heading toward a makeover to make it pure 1940's and I try to fgure out a way to get a vanity into it as well!

I feel like a complete slattern now i've seen your lovely photos! You have given me the impetus to go and tidy up! Your dressing table is amazing and so organised.

We are planning to re-do our bedroom in a 1940's style, but as it's so tiny I had given up on having a vanity table. But after discussing it with my darling we think we can make it, so I have been looking for a small one. Just for fun I asked a co-worker if he didn't have one he needed to get rid of. His late wife who was much older than he and a true lady was just the kind of woman I can imagine having had a vanity. To my surprise he said that yes indeed, he had a green one from 1946- would I like to have that?

We are planning to have purple and green as colour scheme, so this sounds just about perfect. Hopefully it isn't to large.

Here's my dresser. I have a 1930s dresser and robes. I put little rubber stoppers under the glass top on the dresser so I can display some of my compacts and vintage jewellery.

What a brilliant idea - you can admire your pieces but they are protected at the same time - PLUS you won't forget any jewellery that you have! I have some lovely pieces that I had put away in boxes for safekeeping but forgot a lot of them. I went into Muji and bought a clear drawer for my costume jewellery so now I can see everything I have. I have all my stud earrings in a separate jewellery box:

Muji also do some great stackable boxes that you can use for make-up - again I was forgetting what I had as I had them stored in a kind of travel case - this way I can quickly get my hands on what I need:

I can't wait for the day that me and my dressing table will be reunited - but for the moment these little boxes will more than do....
