Wives tend to come around. When I first started wearing brimmed hats regularly in the late 80's my better half thought it strange and I caught the usual heat about why so many hats? The other day I grabbed a baseball hat on the way out the door and my wife commented that I didn't look like me.

I have a slightly reversed situation. She likes me in my fedoras, for sure, but she likes me better in baseball hats because that's what I always wore when we met because I used to travel almost exclusively by motorcycle and would stuff my ball cap into my jacket. A fedora would've gotten squished.

Much the same here, Hato.

Although, to be fair, she did buy me a hat from Mr. Fawcett and is in the process of getting me a Penman as well.

I think we all go thru the "too many hats" stage. Mine consistently comments that they look good, she likes them, but why so many. After all, you can only wear one at a time.

Collections

Over the years some of my hobbies have resulted in several small "collections": firearms. knives, flashlights, luggage, and now hats.

The other night I was talking to my wife (who also doesn't understand the need for more than a few hats) and I appealed to her intellect and compassion:

Aside from hats, I have really not added to my other collections over the past few years. I explained that as I age and am no longer able to be as actively involved with my other hobbies I will still be able to wear my hats. I will eventually sell or give away the guns and knives but as an old man I will at least be able to enjoy the simple act of wearing a hat (even though I may forget it is on my head).

Not sure if my argument worked but hopefully it will see me through my next purchase or two!

Now, if you start collecting women, well that's another story!

I wish I had the time, money, and energy required for that hobby! If I did, however, perhaps I could blame it on a middle-age crisis.

Oops, that one was just used up for the recent Miata sports car acquisition. :)

yesterday a Dobbs derby (late 40's) arrived at my door. The wife said "you make the things. Isn't that enough!".

My wife has mixed feeling about my hats. She said that one thing that drives her crazy is my " dang hats". But she also said one thing she love about me is my " dang hats", because I wear them regardless of what anyone thinks.

This is a great post right here. My wife used to complain about the few hats that I have; an old Akubra bushman (which after a brim-trimming accident has become quite the nice Rorschach "Watchmen" movie hat), an Akubra Fed IV (Indy style), a Bailey Brandt, a Panama, and a cheap DP crushable. I've long wanted something classy, and recently decided to go for a Bogart look. I was looking at some Stetsons, other Akubras, and finally ended on John Penman's site. While I haven't been sure whether I can put the money into something hand-made, my wife stopped me on Penman's site and pointed right at the Casablanca saying "that one". She said that I would look great wearing it.... when I responded by saying "I thought my hats drove you nuts" she said basically the same thing.

Hey J, when my misses starts to make comments, I always turn one out in her size and then offer to to her. She always say "really one for me?''. This usually gives me a bit of a break form the hat comments. I figure that she is just as big as a hat nut as myself. I like to think its her subtle way to ask for one...mabee I'm wrong , but it keeps me happy in hats.;)
