From what I've heard Shaw and Dreyfuss didn't care for each other off camera, so a lot of the animonity they display towards each other on screen was natural.

And good, then, for Shaw being able to act that he had developed respect and concern for Hooper toward the end when they are putting Hopper in the shark cage. As with so many moment in that movie, it feels real, it feels like raw human emotion - hell, we're dying out on this boat, not much reason to keep emotions in check now.

I love Jonathan Quayle Higgins III quotes. Back in the day, I identified with Thomas Magnum. Now, a couple of decades later, I thoroughly and completely identify with Higgins. One more:

Higgins: Malaysia, 1943, our regiment was hopelessly outnumbered and facing certain death. In our ranks was a young lieutenant, Ian Bowerly, and during a lull in the battle, he recited "Gunga Din," I suppose to keep up our courage for facing the inevitable. His eloquent recitation grew increasingly louder until it thundered through the jungle. To our amazement, the Japanese troops walked forward. Though they spoke no English, they were entranced by the poem. They allowed us all to leave the area unharmed except for poor Mr. Bowerly. As we made our escape we could hear him reciting other Kipling favorites, literally for miles. To this day his fate remains unknown.

Heh. That reminds me of Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren in "The Hateful 8." He was in "Wellenbeck Prisoner of War Camp, West Virginia." It was a Rebel camp. Pretty good trick, considering West Virginia was a Union state. I don't know if this was supposed to be an alternate time stream, a la "Inglorious Basterds," or just that Tarantino is one of those people who assume that "southern" means "Confederate."
