If your neighbors wonder why you never fix your dryer, because you have been using a clothesline for the last five years.

You might be an atavist

This made me chuckle. The dryer thing is so American. I'm currently helping 20 American families move to Dresden in Germany and the first thing anyone asks me is "do the apartments have dryers there?"

My answer of "no" is oft greeted with shock and then despair.

I have a dryer in London and I've never used it - it just came with the flat.

:D

If you've never quite gotten the hang of printed sewing patterns...

If you've ever stuck your left arm out the window to signal a turn...

If you have a coffee can next to the sink where you save your cooking grease...

If you still buy coffee that comes in cans...

If you've ever had nightmares about air raid sirens...

If you think Technicolor hasn't been the same since they added blue...

If deep down in your very heart of hearts you feel kind of sorry for Mickey Owen...

If you have a favorite Dionne Quintuplet...

If you still iron because you like it.
If you still go to church and read your Bible because you like it.
If you still watch for Robins to start getting your garden ready.
If you still like to have your honeys "supper" on the table.
You wouldn't be caught dead out shopping without makeup on.
You know how to sew.
You know which tools to hand honey when he is working on stuff. (Phillips, Flathead, Level, etc. 2x4, 2x6 and can help hold stuff up if necessary.
You know how to cook real food from scratch including a mean pot of beans.
If you hang around with all the other atavist on the FL.
If you adore LizzieMaine and love to read her wisdom.
If you feel sorry for those who have never heard a ball game on an old fashioned transistor radio.
If you love to pick up vintage stuff and preserve it and clean it up and sell it for all the other atavist will have it for the future. :D

:eek:fftopic: I've never had a dryer either, although I'm not an atavist. The problem with line drying though, is that we have about 4 days a year when it's nice enough outside! Cue lots of drying clothes inside the house, making my walls all mouldy! lol

I just can't bring myself to use the dryer, its so very bad for the environment that I get guilt just thinking about it. I mean - it takes hours to dry a load of clothing when you can just leave it overnight on a clothes horse and its dry by morning anyway.

I can kind of understand it if someone has a large family.

Word. We never dry our clothes because 1. my husbad is a Brit and he never dried his clothes, and 2. it's bad for your clothes -- makes them shrink and stretch out faster. We use the clothes horse and a heater. Dry by morning!

lol ME! I just feel like I'm missing something when I work from one. And don't even get me started on "modern vintage" sewing patterns! I don't think I've made one yet that didn't confuse me and/or come out way too BIG! Grrr. I've hated them all so far.

If you prefer using a vintage sewing pattern for proper fit and ease of use -
:eek:fftopic:
I used to sew quite a bit but the new patterns are basically for one time use. Tissue paper. The older ones were so durable and thicker. I gave it up when this came about.

And one more batch before heading off to work...

If you've ever had a heated argument over whether lard or Crisco makes a better pie crust...

If you find it necessary to identify certain of your favorite movies as "talkies"...

If instead of counting sheep at night, you lie awake thinking of new verses for Cole Porter "list" songs...

If you've got it all worked out in your mind what would happen if Bertie Wooster married Stiffy Byng...

If you keep a rubber apron in the pantry to wear while defrosting the fridge...

If you ever made a note of how long it took you to read an article in Liberty magazine...

If your writing fingers have permanent ink stains...

If pull-ring tops on soup cans make you wonder what the world's coming to...

If you see a person washing dishes before they put them in a dishwasher and wonder why they just don't wash them completely in the first place
If the zippers on your clothes are actually metal
If your shoes have leather soles
If you know what dungarees are
If your car has white walls and you know where to get more
If your camera uses film
If you know what a ditto machine is and have actually used one
If you know what Chock full o'Nuts or Sanka is

yoooouu might be an atavist. (like Jeff Foxworthy says);) :p

I wouldnt agree with that, at all. But what do I know. I think the difference is newer patterns were meant to be cut through (hence the stopping of individually cut out pieces for the cheaper one tissue sheet) where as older patterns were designed to be traced more often than not.

But I digress...

I do *completly* relate to Lizzie's comment on never quite getting the hang of printed patterns. All those words...:eusa_doh:

Why would they call any of us that? They do because they don't have a word like atavist to use instead.

Well, Sir James, if they are going to call anyone a pimp, out of hand, then they certainly do not have the wherewithal to understand an obscure term like atavist....[huh]
