WW2 toddler clothing

The Hairy Chap and I are going to do some work with a local museum.
We're good to go - he might need to have a haircut though :eeek: - but what about the Small?

He's nearly 2 and full of beans, so I'm thinking rompers; all the images I can find, though, are for lightweight, what I'd think of summer style suits (even the knitted ones look quite lightweight)
It might be that they all look summer-y to my jaundiced modern eye
But I'd like to have a cold-weather reserve in place for my little 'un.

Does anyone have any suggestions...?

A sailor suit is classic, and can be warm or cold weather.

Blouse, trousers, and hat, typically. Sometimes the collar comes off as well, though it isn't considered a separate piece. I'm thinking of making a sailor suit for my boy, though without the hat. He doesn't care for hats right now, though he loves wearing mine.

No. ours likewise not a fan of hats, despite looking quite stunning in a titfer.
Do you have a pattern in mind or are you going to draft your own?

During the war, wasn't cloth under strict rationing? Perhaps that explains the thin babysuits.

Here are a few shots of yours truly in 1948, age 1 1/2. I have overalls in the color photos. These are slides that have had the color go all gooshy in, but they have a lot of information in them, (Plus they're AWFUL cute )

Thanksgiving, 1948. Check out my cute little wool suit that my grandmother made for me.

I still have it, and it's on its way to my niece, who is going to be a mom in September.

I love the second photo of you in the overalls, dhermann. It reminds me of our little ones. We have a four year old who continues to wear his little overalls and we have recently added a hand me down of his dad's, a coverall. The coverall is extremely cute when he is "working" on his Powerwheels.

And our ninth month old daughter hangs around the house in her overalls, even though my mother call hers a mini-romper since it sounds more girly.

Thank you, everyone. Interestingly, in my "travels" I discovered quite a few images of little ones in winter coats and hats, with bare legs. To me, it looks really chilly! On the other hand talking to my dad, small boys in winter often were still in short trousers - going into long pants was a sign of being grown up. Chilblains on one's legs were something of an occupational hazard in North-West english winters!
(Presumably like the historical custom of "breeching" - the ceremony at which a little boy became a man by putting his first grown-up suit on.)
