Lol I know Monitor is saying in jest, but going off topic a little, I saw another thread about Red Wings boots (which was locked now) containing some comments which make me uncomfortable.

I am from Hong Kong so you can say I am Chinese (although due to different stages of development, the culture and alot of things are quite different between Mainland China and Hong Kong). To all my fellow board members who are not of Chinese descent, I certainly look Chinese. So I guess I will be frowned upon quite abit by certain members here, if they see me in person without knowing who I am.

After seeing those comments I have to say I am quite disappointed that supposedly educated people here would actually have narrow views on certain issues....including manufactured goods from China (or other developing countries, for that matter).

Sorry end of rant.

Btw.... Very nice RRL jacket Monitor ! I always liked RRL stuff but they are way too expensive....

You are making the assumption that people are judging the makers of the product rather than the product itself.
Why would anyone frown at you for being chinese? Unless you are making poor quality leather jackets and trying to scam people with them it isn't really an issue!

Well I guess the specific comments I saw on such thread is that one thinks that China as a whole makes “poisoned goods” and comments of this sort, basically a blanket statement.

As for why anyone would frown on me Being Chinese, I have no idea , but unfortunately if the certain forum member making the “ poisoned goods “ from China comment saw me in person without knowing me , pretty sure he or she would associate me with something not good ...

For what it's worth, for a long time products made in China entering North America were generally junk quality, hence there is a lingering bias against them. Further to this, at some point many North American companies closed operations in the US putting people out of work and shifted production to China and other places on the west side of the Pacific, so the old bias now has another twist to it. Obviously, Chinese factories can make stuff as good as anyplace in the world, if requested, which is something that has been discussed in other threads here, so I hope we don't have to re-hash it in this thread. As for racism or racialism, I think we can agree it's not what is motivating discussions about Chinese made goods, even if sometimes posts are not worded clearly.

I think some of the (undeserved) anti-Chinese hostility should be shrugged off (easier said than done, I know). It doesn't seem to be based on any real direct experience with China, but rather based on insecurities around domestic politics/economy/self-identity based on over-simplistic tribal identity myths, etc.
The Japanese community went through exactly the same thing in the 70's/80's, and the Taiwanese/Hong Kong/Chinese ex-pat community in the late 40's/50's (in fact, the Chinese were widely exploited in 1800's America to build the railways) but this current bout of anti-Chinese feeling that some have is just one more wave of anxiety that some Americans/Westerners have been feeling on and off as a challenge to US/Western post WWII global power status (IMHO).
The 'rise' of China is nothing new. It was 'Japan as #1' anxiety before that.
We can't go into politics, but people who judge others by skin color, ethnicity don't have opinions you should bother yourself with.
