Yeah, I am a winter. Moving in that direction more and more. Thank Renee for all your info. I knew there was something one is supposed to do to sparkle the gray.

All the guys are going seasons. Huh................lol

Royal Blue is definitely my best color.

Not sure if this is covered anywhere on the FL so far and I searched but cannot find this info if it is.

Wondering on opinions about hair and coloring or anything else on more mature shall we say women.

1. Should one only have shorter hair at 40 or 50?
2. To flatter should a mature woman go darker in color or lighter?
Any ideas? Personal observations? etc.

Hi there,
Older woman should ALWAYS go lighter! I think this is, not only a 'rule', but one that makes sense, as us older ladies should try to 'soften' our look, and darker hair dyes are sort of ageing.

As to length...Ha ha! I have a friend (in Liverpool) who believes that women over THIRTY should cut their hair. Personally, I believe that hair can be any length, BUT, that it looks more 'youthful' if long hair is arranged in 'up dos' (even simple ones like chignons).

Even though I hate Brigitte Bardot for her horrible politics, I love that she kept her trademark tresses long, wearing them up in a loose and flattering style.

And also, I think that the 'old ladies' around today have retained the haircuts of their younger days (particularly the '50s 'bubble cut'), and so I think that we - these days - associate short cuts with older people, the result being that a short cut might actually age us!

(BTW, I'm about to be 43, have shoulder length, dyed blonde hair...and am growing it long again....just so I can wear it 'up'!)

What a great thread!

I agree, the older one gets the lighter the hair. But yeah, it needs to match skin tone. My mom's natural color was a gorgeous dark auburn. As she aged, her colorist turned her blonde. I never thought it looked right with her skin. I think she would've been striking if she'd let it go white (she would have been pure white, by then), but she absolutely refused to look "old."

I got my skin from her. So I figure when I'm gray enough, and ready to do it, I'll just stop coloring my hair and let nature have at it.

And regarding age and hair length, I'm with LizzieMaine: "Nertz" to those who say we have to wear it short! I'm 44 and growing mine out. It's a few inches past my shoulders and I've gotten a lot more compliments than when it was short. And I don't feel like a soccer mom clone anymore. lol

WOW. I'm thinking that you with long WHITE hair would look nothing short of AMAZING!!!! (And like I said...I'm 43 and growing mine out; long hair on us 'mature' dames is the ticket!!!! But I've been dying mine blonde for so long that I don't even know how much gray I might have! Maybe I'll let it ALL grow out (length AND color) and see what I'm left with! And if it's white...I'm with ya!!!)

I think many people who say they dislike gray hair on women are really put off by (1) the short gray "helmet head" look that so many older ladies sport
.

Oh my God, I TOTALLY agree! Gray or white/silver hair is beautiful and isn't actually 'ageing' at all if it's longish (or, as in your case, bob-length). It's just when it's short that it gets that 'helmet look' (like Jamie Lee Curtis...who looks, in my opinion, 10 years older than she is with that cropped, grey 'helmet'.)
