Why post non-golden age threads?

First off, I'm not complaining.
Many people post threads about bumper stickers, new television series, etc. At first I was thrown off but noticed many people enjoyed responding. (I've even done it. )
I have theories as to why some people post modern questions but I would like to hear first hand reasons.

Sincerely,
TheWOLF

For the record this counts as a non-golden age thread.lol

Well,,, It should be known that the Lounge is not stuck in the past. There are many vintage enthusiasts here, though I for one am proud to be living in the modern day. Some posts do conflict with the mentality of the Lounge and they usually fade away or are moderated.

Why are non golden era threads posted and responses given? We are not living in the past.

Certain non-golden age threads are applicable to the theme of the board.
A discussion about how to utilize a cell phone with a vintage styled outfit is something worth discussing.
Discussing modern day equivalent of shoes or suits seems relevant to the forum too.
I have taken a much needed break from most of the Observation Bar threads. I mainly stick to movies, hats, and suits but this thread is a fine exception.

Well, the Observation Bar has many uses, of course, but one of the most important to me is a way for all of us to relate to each other outside of the confines of a thread in one of the other areas. In other words, if you are speaking about "ties" in a thread, it would be off topic to start speaking about your hometowns, but you could come over to the OB and start a post about hometowns as a way of relating and building bonds of friendship.

Also, The Lounge is a collection of very knowledeable and talented people; if you have a question or a problem, chances are there is someone here who could help.

The OB is a conversation with our peers here, and as Matt said, we all live in the present, so there are going to be threads with contemporary themes.

I have limited interest in "The Golden Age" in general, and note that there is no specific time period referenced. 30's? 40's? 50's? All in the eye of the beholder.

I'm here mainly because of an interest in good hats, and because of the good company on the Lounge. So if it were all "Golden Age" threads, I'd be gone.

Just because...

...people are people and they live here, and now. They may have lots of diverse interests, which includes the shared affinity for vintage and Golden Era -but- in the end modern life is where we live. We just can't help relating to one another as modern people in the modern world through modern technology.

If we were psychotically stuck in the Golden Era, we'd be communicating by telegram and insisting that the messenger wear a 'monkey suit'.

Simply because it's a good place to speak with fellow loungers. It would be a less exciting place if the Observation Bar were gone. There would still be plenty of places to talk about hats, suits, etc. - but, aside from PM, there would be no other way to interact with the interesting folks that post in those strictly "vintage" threads. Plus, I find it very interesting to learn personal information about other people who wear vintage or vintage inspired clothing.

My take.

Well, you all know me as a living and breathing transplant from the 30's and 40's... that's who I am. I don't care for much of the way of the world today... it's a depressing thing. If I want to be depressed, I'll do it 30's stlye and look good wile being so. lol

I don't mind posts that are "Non period" at all... I enjoy talking about TV shows, movies and other things that I've come to enjoy. People did talk about news and events of their time 70 years ago... why shouldn't we? If we were to talk about events and news of the 30's or 40's, we'd (A) have to know our history REALLY darn good! And (B) it would be kind of weird. lol

I love the period I've come to love and live... I wouldn't change it for the world... but, it's fun to talk about things here in the Observation Bar that are of a horse of a different color. ;)

Just like many of you all have expressed, I see this as a place to get together with friends and chat. We live in modern times, that can't be denied, and might be kind of strange if we did. I like the Lounge because I can come on and have interesting and intelligent conversations with great people about a plethora of topics. I love everything vintage, but I also really enjoy the conversations that take place about other topics. There is a lot to be learned here.

I think one of the really valuable things about the Observation Bar is that it's a place where we can really sit down, relax, and actually get to know something about each other -- something beyond the common interest that drew us here in the first place.

Like Daisy says, there *is* a lot to be learned here, and I think some of the most important things we can learn is how other people think, live, and experience the world around them. I grew up in a very homogenous environment -- everybody looked the same, came from pretty much the same background, tended to hold to the same basic point of view -- and the older I got and the more I began to think about life, the more stultifying that environment became. One of the great advantages of an online environment like this one is that we *aren't* all the same, in how we think or feel or experience things -- and the more we get to know each other, the more we're able share things that are interesting or amusing or important to us in some way the better-rounded we ourselves become.

Thank you, everyone, for responding.
The main reason I do it is because I do consider y'all friends and interesting to "talk" to even though we've never met.
Besides, it seems like our topics tend to meander and lead to other things. After "hearing" someone's similar opinions on something golden age it is interesting to hear their other opinions.
It sounds like the basic answer is that we are a community and don't want to limit our discourse.

Sincerely,
TheWOLF

We live in the now of today. Actually many questions or polls are rather timeless in their content and could have been answered by regular folks now or 65 years ago with interesting results.

I am one person who can "live" in yester-year for an entire day as I write accounts of pilots in WW 2 and whatnot. Even when I'm not actively pounding the keys I can mentally be "there" rolling over historical events in my mind in order to get a new perspective on them.

I think we are romanced by the alure of the era(s) we hold so dear, but we are also practical modern folks, in knowing that is just that.

We admire 'then', but we live 'now'.

may i please —

use some of your statements in my vintage clothing story?

i have a quick questionaire also about all this "stuff".

:eek:fftopic: i try to explain to non-web people how diverse our virtual communities can be. we are no longer bound by space in determining our friends. i had a major bad car accident in 2002 and received cards and flowers and balloons from all over the country and europe from internet friends that shared the same interests i did, the ballet and the desert. all part of my community. that is the strength of the web.
