I remember "cornbread are square" from a skit on the Arthur Smith Show back in the early 1960's. Of course if you're not from North Carolina and over 50 years old, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. [huh]

Not role models as such, but rather inspirations for various reasons:

Paddy, Marc Chevalier, Scotrace, James Powers, Feraud, Quigley Brown (the last three being my "necktie cronies"). There are likely others, but those come to mind right now...

I haven't given it much thought, but I would have to say that I'm sure there are many fine people here; ladies and gentlemen. I don't think I have a single role model, per se, but I suppose that the most inspiring demographic here are the younger members of the Lounge, between their teens to their early to mid twenties. I'm a part of that demographic myself, and it is certainly all-the-more inspiring to wear a fedora and dress (somewhat in my case) vintage-inspired if there are others doing it.

I don't think I'm going to name names, but perhaps you know who you are already.

I spend so much time trying to figure out what I want it to mean when I try to be me, that I don't really do the role model thing. Everyone's got something good to borrow. If you limit yourself to one or two, you're selling yourself short.

For example, if you look at Lizzie Maine, you'll realize you don't really need anything the modern world has to offer. You can find alternatives if you try. But, if you're like me, you don't want to go that far. So...

You can take a look at JB and see how he integrates a look from a world he never knew with a society that cares immensely about what you look like. It's easy to be an old guy that looks like an old guy. It's harder to pull off being a young guy dressed like an old guy.

You've got hat experts, suit experts, etc. Read some posts for confidence and reassurance that you're onto something good. Read other posts to remind you not to get arrogant. Everyone's a role model. It's just a matter of figuring out why. Everyone's better than you at something. That's how I look at it.

Well yes, I find that true in my experience. Mostly among my own siblings. I've been told that I am not dressed "normally," for my age group, and on occasion, there have been attempts to persuade me to wear more common, casual clothing accessories such as t-shirts, shorts, and even baseball caps (never really interested me, I suppose I've been spoiled by the fact that I've been introduced to fur felt through a cowboy hat I wore between the ages of 8 to 11), which I regard as summer-wear, on the beach (for me anyway, no offense to anyone who enjoys wearing 'em!).

If the bit of ribbing I receive from some of my family is left out, the general public seems to have no problem with me dressing as I do. Of course there's going to be the scoffers and mockers out there, but I don't recall any real verbal insults (OK, I got "yeehaw!"). I receive compliments on occasion for the hat, although the general overall attire may have something to do with convincing the other that the hat actually looks good as well.

You're right that I am, in a way, inspired by how older men may dress in public, especially by those that I've seen actually wearing fedoras, or flat caps (I don't own one, but I enjoy seeing them). Now keep in mind that these types are usually anywhere between their forties or fifties to their eighties (these folks could range from World War II veterans, Silent Generation members, or baby boomers), and I may be stereotyping here, but in my experience they are generally seen in suits, sport coats, dress shirts, slacks, flannel shirts, and sometimes jeans. Perhaps I may have spotted a fellow Lounger without realizing it, but I'm pretty sure that they were not affiliated with this board. I guess you can say I do find that inspiring, and as a result, I've found it within myself to try to keep their traditional, conservative sense of style alive in the 21st century.

To be clear, I'm not trying to be elitist and claim my ways superior to those of others. I firmly believe that I, or anyone else here, is no better a person for wearing a fur felt fedora or a custom or vintage suit. If anything, this may be considered good taste or style, but that does not improve one's character.
