My wife's cabal of high school friends who try to meet regularly organized a trip to Kitchener, Ontario, to see an acoustic set by the Toronto-based Nova Scotia band The Trews (alt rock).

An awesome night, and they are heading to the states for a short tour shortly.

It's been a while but the last concert worth mentioning that we saw in person was of Max Raabe, who is from Berlin (Germany, that is). His little swing band is called the Palast Orchester. The little band plays and he sings. There are many YouTube videos of them. Most he does pre-war music and he sings in at least four languages.

I like most European music old and new and would give anything to be able to attend the Musikantenstadl but that'll never happen. At least I can watch full-length broadcasts of Viva Volksmusik, which is Swiss. Not so many European groups visit this country save for opera and ballet but one Slovenian folk-pop group, Navihanke, did in fact tour the states. But alas, their tour started in Pittsburgh, which is apparently home to a Slovenian population. Incredibly, they were in Texas longer than anywhere else. Nothing to do with Texas Czech, however.

A co-worker won some tickets, but couldn't make the date so my wife and I enjoyed Gregg Allman with special guest Gabriel Kelly in the historic Gillioz Theatre in Springfield, MO last night. Gregg, at age 68, sounds about as good as ever and the band was top notch. Mr. Kelly was a pleasant surprise -- good fun.

Looks like a gorgeous place to see a show, Bob. Mr. Allman is a top-notch entertainer (though I have only ever seen him with the Bros). He's opening for ZZ Top at a local venue later this summer.

Michael Buble,......what a show.

When you go to a concert, you know how you're not really hearing the singer's voice, but an amplification of it via a multi million dollar system?

Well,......at the end of this concert, he said he wanted to sing to us not a mic,....so he put the mic in it's stand, stepped up to the edge of the stage and sang as loud as he could to over 50,000 of us.
We all heard him,....and it was perfect.
He is phenomenal. I've seen him perform live a few times and it's always "Wow!" nonstop.
:D

Saw Pokey Lafarge and band at a small music festival in Reeds Spring, Missouri over the weekend. He was there with the Nace Brothers as well as Auntie Em and the Tornadoes, The Hurricanes, ClawHammer, Tom Hall, Shannon Stine, Alison Neil, Clint Dinkins and Lori Locke with Andrew Sparks.

A wonderful live show. The band is extremely talented -- especially harp (banjo, guitar, percussion) player "Cowboy" Ryan Koenig. I've never seen someone play a harmonica no-hands by sticking it in his mouth like a stub of a cigar. How did he do that?

My wife, my youngest daughter and her friend all had a great time as well.

Highly recommended.

Saw Old Crow Medicine Show with guest Dom Flemons last Thursday at the historic Gillioz Theatre in Springfield, MO.

Who thought general admission would be a good idea in 90-deg. heat? Waitin' in line...

The theatre is a pretty amazing place dating back to 1926.

Dom Flemons Trio was amazing, but the set was far too short and an encore was not forthcoming.

Old Crow had the crowd on it's feet and dancing throughout the show. These guys are really good live with tons of energy and an amazing ability to move to different instruments as needed. It almost seemed that one or two of them played every instrument that was on the stage at some point (excluding the pedal steel guitar).

The hat theme was western, but I missed seeing the Open Road that former member Gill Landry would often sport.

The set was a bit short and was missing a couple of my favorites (given that those were sung by another former member Willie Watson may explain it). Since I had been up since 2:00 am that morning I didn't file a complaint about the length.

The encore was awesome with the Dom Flemons Trio joining in for a cover of Bobby Troup's classic "Route 66" (appropriate as we were on Route 66 and it was the weekend of the "Birthplace of Route 66 Festival" here in town). They also did a wonderful cover of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" to end the show.

Overall it was a great show. Hope they come back soon.

Max is brilliant so too is The Palast Orchester.
Last Sunday I saw The Jive Aces, with guest, fifties rocker, Laurie London, and quite a few others.
