As I mentioned before in this thread, there were more gents wearing the classic American look (Brooks Bros, J.Press, Paul Stuart, Oxxford, etc,...) in the 70's than there are now. That to me is a better indicator of style than to point out the poor choices of the fashion forward minority. And even if you didn't care for the cut/fabric of their suit, at least they were wearing one.

Also, let's not forget the 40's revival in the 70's, particularly for ladies' fashion.

I wouldn't call them deplorable, but as for me, I'd say I'm more on the 1950s/1960s side of retro, with a bit of '40s World War II inspiration, and combined with some modern sensibilities. There are some people here who can wear full 1920s/'30s attire and look great.

I know it's a TV show that's supposed to portray the ideal family and all, but I was watching an episode of The Brady Bunch, and I noticed that they're a heck of a lot more dressed up than today's families, typically speaking. I think on the Hawaii episode, they even wore suits getting on and off the plane ride!

I think jazz suit is a zoot suit, and if so, you can see one by watching Jim Carrey's "The Mask". I think Cab Calloway also wore one. They had baggy pants that cinched around the ankles, and fairly flashy coats with long tails. I like them.

I think the single worst fashion trend of the last forty years -- bar none -- is the idea of low-rise pants on men. They make virtually every man who wears them look like he has short, stumpy Charlie Brown legs -- and if the guy has any kind of a belly, they make it hang out like a sack of wet dough. I don't remember seeing this much before the '90s, and I wish I never had to see it again.

You're fortunate that you weren't in California in the '70s; we younger folk just about all had low-rise jeans...

I agree, but at that time we were very young, flat-stomached, and thought that it made us attractive to the ladies...But low-rise dress slacks? That I could never accomodate myself to.

Not really, though you might say the Jazz suit begat the Zoot suit it was much more closely fitted (trousers especially) and with a shorter jacket.
