And of course tolerance is open to interpretation. Example, a couple of days ago a film called Blue Story was shown in Birmingham. It's a film about black gangs. The cinema was invaded by different factions of black gangs wielding machetes. "We will not tolerate this" said the cinema chain as they banned the film. "We will not tolerate this, it's racist" said the black community and the film was reinstated. So who's being intolerant? Blessed if I know.

It certainly is the most versatile flavor: it comes in handy for Cherries Jubilee, Bananas Foster, and a milkshake or sundae if you have the flavoring syrups. The house brand at Costco is one of the better one's I've found, aside from the stuff I make at home.

We just retired from the Windy City to the Pacific Northwest, and there's a local Oregon brand (Tillamook. "Made with extra cream. Not extra air.") here that has a variety of great fruit flavors. I went completely head over heels for their Oregon Black Cherry and Peaches & Cream... but their Mountain Huckleberry is top notch as well.

As far as Sealtest? My grandparents liked it in the Fifties: I tried a dish a few years ago, and the most charitable assessment I can muster is that they're not exactly poised to put Breyer's or Ben & Jerry out of business soon. I'll let it go at that.

I like a rich vanilla if it's an accompaniment to something else, like a good rhubarb crumble. Otherwise, I'm a sucker for something like honeycomb. DairyQueen do a blue bubblegum flavour that I like in small quantities. I take childlike joy in it turning my tongue blue - and my poo green.

Try the Tillamook Oregon Hazelnut and Salted Caramel. And try not to eat it all in one sitting.

Breyer's vanilla was once the ambrosia of ice creams -- I'd buy a half gallon once or twice a year and eat the whole thing right out of the box. Nothing could improve upon it, but Kraft, as is its corporate wont, did to it exactly what it did to Nabisco -- turned it into a blighted, empty shell of its former self. You get better ice cream now in a Hoodsie cup.

I've seen many a clash between chocolate and vanilla lovers, so the answer is yes.
