Inside my hall closet, I have a strip of 1x4 mounted on the door side above the door. I have enough width to hang three hats there. I also added shelves above the single (default) shelf above the closet rod, which gives me two additional shelves. I place fedoras on those shelves with the brim hanging over the front, or by preference, sit hats such as an Open Road (no flip-down brim) on those shelves. There's no problem I'm aware of with sitting a flat-brimmed hat on a flat curface. The upshot is that I can fit all my dress hats into the closet, but I have to put my western hats in boxes. That's good, because I don't wear them often and don't need them to get dusty while sitting.:D

...hang your hat?

I have a pretty involved computer system (recording studio) so I keep my fedoras on top of the two computer monitors and the speakers.

-It accomplishes several things, it makes it easy to select which one to wear each morning, and when I get back home, I just plop it right back in it's spot.

-It allows them to be displayed so I can admire them, and since my studio has a nostalgic radio theme, it adds a nice touch to the overall look of the place. A lamintated "Press" card usually rests inside the ribbon of one of the four to complete the theme.

My western hats sit on a shelf in the closet.

Once I get that hang of this newfangled digital camera, I'll upload pix.

I have three hats I use often and they are kept on a wooden freestanding coatrack that has been converted to a hatrack. The rest are kept in hatboxes in my closet. They are kept in the box upsidedown on their crowns. The hatboxes are cheap cardboard items I picked up at some home goods store.

At the recent NYC Event MK revealed an upcoming Fedora Lounge item. It is a leather hatbox. It was brown and embossed with a croc skin print. I think he mentioned the F.L. logo would be on the box. I am not sure when it will be available but this is something that I will definitely pick up.

I keep my personal hats right by the door on a hat rack made by a friend in the Ozarks. He makes them by hand for out store out of Ozarkian Walnut, and they have big knobs to protect the hat, and are hand rubbed with natural waxes, no stain, varnish or oils. They are really nice. He's a retired disabled vet, and can use any support. They are in our store under hat care.

I've claimed the top portion shelf of the closet. I keep my fedoras in the round shaped donut that came with the box. They rest upside down as not to damage the brim.

Just got my wall-mount hat rack from The Fedora Store. It's beautiful! I've assembled it but haven't mounted it on the wall yet.

Once that's done, the next problem will be deciding which 4 hats to hang on it.

Or maybe I should just buy 2 more! ;)

Tony, glad you like the rack. I drove 8 hours to Missouri to watch Jerry Packer of Comedy Woodwurx make the rack, as you bought the first one. He's been churning them out ever since in his beautiful wood shop in the ozarks. The local walnut is awesome. Just a little wax brings the wood right to life. I'll let Jerry know where to find your comments. Thanks for supporting the disabled "hard working" veterans initiative!! Should I mention how many hat racks I need and have? Nah.....

The bedpost, usually. I have slept with my hat on over my face before (IE: on plane/bus/boat).

Location and Selection

No Hair, Nice Rack (better than "big hat no cattle...", right?)

Right by the door...makes selection fast 'n' easy, and moths hate the moving air and occasional sunlight - I hope! The chrome is not the most elegant or aesthetic application, but practicality wins. One disadvantage is that any that sit for more than a week must be well brushed before stepping out.
It may be time for another one since they have begun spilling over onto the old Zenith ouija radio...

period resistol hat care/ storage instructions

Personally, I have hats stacked all in the top of my closet, on shelves in my room, and on my dresser. I'mlooking for an old industrial hat rack, like you see sometimes in old funky barber shops and greasy spoons, but I don't think I'm going to find one before I go to college, so the hats will just stay where they are.
As for how they should be- an old steel grey executive model Resistol I got has directions for this on a trifuld glued into the back of the sweatband.

"This is your Self-Conforming hat- lift the seal and know why it's different from all others."
-"when putting on your hat... or removing it, hold brim firmly at front and back with tips of fingers close to crown"
-"always turn brim up... when placing on a table or shelf. If caught in the rain uncrease crown and allow to dry at room temperature."
- avoid stacking. The hair oil from another haat will ruin the crown of yours."
- In brushing your hat... always use a soft bristle hat brush. Always brush hat in a counter clockwise direction"
For renovating... take you hat to a qualified renovator or return it to the merchant from whom it was purchased for FACTORY RENOVATION"

Where do you put your hat ...

when there is no cloakroom, or even a coat rack with hat shelf?

Yesterday I was out-of-town for the confirmation of the son of a friend. At the church, no cloakroom. Not even a coat rack.

Afterwards we went to a fairly nice restaurant. They had a bar with hangers for hanging coats, but no hat shelf (and of course, no coat check).

At the church I had the hat on my lap, and at the restaurant I put it over the (unlit) table-light.

What would you have done?

P.S. Just reminiscing - I remember these clips on the backs of the pews for hats when I was a kid ...
