When was the C crown created?

Being more of a fan of the pre-war style of hats, I've always been inclined to the center crease bash on a crown. However, I have seen pre 1940's hat's with different crown styles like the tear drop or c style bash and I do like the look of it. I was curious as to when the C style started showing up in hats and why it became the prominent style after the war.

Tough to make any sort of blanket statement but I'd guess that as crowns became shorter and brims narrower there wasn't enough height to do a nice center dent.

no way to know for sure ... but I have studied hundreds of pictures of hats through eras and I noticed that up until around the mid 1930s you pretty much see nothing but center dents

Perhaps post a photo of the creases you are describing to help clarify the difference between a teardrop and c style bash?

Threads about the history of hats are almost always interesting, but whenever I see one I first think of a photo I saw some years ago of a group of U.S. sailors going on liberty in Honolulu in the 1930's. What was fascinating about it was that every single one was sporting his flat-hat in a different style. I considered that the flat-hat is simply a round piece of cloth, but you could come up with endless variations of it; hats are great expressions of personal style and I'm always glad to see some originality.

Right I know that one ... my mistake... but Roy DID have a double dandy c crown western bash... there's a video of him making his own bash ...soaks the whole hat first...

I believe that was a teardrop - not a C-crown

Bob seems to be a very innovative person. I respect the fact, that he constantly experiments with new grips on long gone hatters' "virtues".

Much respect for Bob - he is among our most talented artisans. That particular crease evokes in my mind scenes from the movie Alien which I would rather dis-member. But I am a big fan of the double dip. I think it is at its best done on a tall crown with the thin, dense, clay-like felt of a vintage clear beaver. Here's one I creased based on another very similar example:

not whole lot of difference from what I've seen

a "C crown" is basically a "teardrop" with corners where a teardrop is rounded the entire way

semantics that I wish to never get involved in .... I don't believe hat shaping should ever be this particular ... just my opinion
