I have worn sunscreen daily for the last 10 years & look 15 years younger, or so everyone says. Being born to good genes also helps, but sunscreen is a miracle drug.

Always carry a floppy sun hat, and/or umbrella, in your car in case you will have to be in the sun.

Sugar or salt makes a great body scrub when mixed with baby oil, or cheapie lotions.

Drink a lot of water, and stay away from coffee & cigarettes.

Use body wash or soap rather than shave cream when you shave your legs, you can tell where the blade ends and the skin begins. I always get knicks when I use shave cream.

Laugh, a lot, your skin will look fresher & healthier, and don't worry about getting lines--you'll get them from frowning/sleeping on your side/face anyway.

2 parts honey + 1 part turmeric powder (I'm reallllllly into natural health and beauty) on your face will calm and soothe it, the turmeric and honey are both antibacterial, and from my Indian friend whose mom and 6 sisters use it says that it makes your skin glow. (It does!) :eusa_clap

JERSEY GIRL!
Hello all, Im new!!

I signed up days ago but my account was just activated! But Ive been reading for days all the tips in the beauty forum and powder room. Needless to say I went out and dropped $150 today in supplies!

Always, loved the forties, since i was a girl. Isnt it funny how you are born to love a decade for no reason? Since I started wearing makeup I always did retro so this isnt new to me. Once in my twenties I started fooling around with the hair. I have the basics down but am always looking for tips. I dont do the whole nine yards though. Its basically my retro hair and makeup, but everyday clothes. Like for instance right now Im in a pair of Victoria Secret jeans with a top from India with sequins and beading all over and wedge shoes ( not very retro). I save the retro clothing part for nights out with my husband, which arent many with 3 kids. I try to buy as much retro clothes as i can, as long as there new!LOL! I dont do thrift shops, its has to be a new "vintage"!

Cant wait to get to know you all!!

We have really hard water in my area, so I'm definitely going to try Joie de Vive's vinegar trick.

Badmamajama, is turmeric the bright yellow spice that goes into curries? Seeing what it does to my plates and pans and aprons (flourescent yellow!) I would be worried about putting it on my face. lol
Or maybe I'm confusing it with some other spice because I'm not sure about the English name for it ..

Here's another tip: Dry, peeling lips after a whole day of wearing lipstick? Mix some warm honey with oatmeal and apply to lips. Leave on as long as you can be bothered. Rinse (or lick) off. Lips will be healed and moisturised.

Hello and welcome to Gilda!

I must confess to doing this to a pair of trousers the other week!

Thankfully they had a pattern to them and I just aligned the staples with the pattern so you couldnt really spot them.

Worked perfectly, and entertained my coworker for ages with it all.

It's a classic for being (sadly) sometimes necessary. I've done this twice at work and now I see people doing it from time to time.

Hooray for resourcefulness!

Nope, that's turmeric! It's amazing stuff. It helps regulate your hormones, too!

Baking soda.

Its good for your teeth, as a body scrub, scouring the tub, and cookies :)

LD

If you put a tablespoon or 2 of baking soda in a plastic or glass bowl (no metal) with a strip of aluminum foil and a cup of hot water then drop silver jewelry into the bowl, it will clean the tarnish from your silver! Let it soak 10 - 15 minutes then buff. Works a charm!

tips i found

To lighten dark circles under your eyes, wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to eyelids for 15-20 minutes.

Dandruff:Vinegar is poured into the hair, massaged into the scalp, and left to dry for a few minutes. Then the hair is washed.

Exfoliate:Wet face (or anywhere on the body), apply a couple of tablespoons of sea salt, then GENTLY massage with a wet washcloth or fingers.
Focus on the T-zone and cheeks, but avoid the eye area. After one or two minutes, rinse with cold water to tighten the pores.

Wrinkles:Mash 1/4 banana until very creamy. Spread all over face and leave for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off with warm water followed by a dash of cold.

Use common whitening toothpaste on nails. Try scrubbing your nails with Pearl Drops, it's just as easy as achieving a pearly white smile and will take away any stains and shine up your nails.

More Pest Control:

Ants hate windex :) Then if you accidentally turn all the white stuff (caulk?) at the edge of your tiles in your kitchen blue (*ahem* not that I did that) you can turn them white again with a Clorox bleach pen.

conditioner for hair....

I hope this falls under Beauty tip, and you all may already know this, but I found out a conditioner trick and it's a lot less expensive. Simply add a very small amount of your condition in a spritzer bottle and fill it up with water. It works very nicely. I have been using the same bottle of conditioner for about 6 months.
