I don't think calling someone who is an avowed atheist and atheist is offensive or wrong other than the act of "calling" someone anything is wrong. There are those who would use it as an insult or slur. Say, in a conversation between two people of faith about God. One doesn't believe the other's views and says, "I see. You're an atheist." If someone practices a faith and the term is used against them it would be considered a slur. And offensive.

You do make my point though. Your antenna is up for that word and you are sensitive to it's use. You're proud of your label under that word and bristle that it could be used as anything other than a compliment. You bristle that it used even in an expository sense next to other words that you, in your mind, know have been used as stones. Your "I am guessing..." is a wrong guess. You still don't know my proclivities for anything. You're only guessing, which is conjecture, which is painting your own picture of me based on very little if any concrete evidence. You read between the lines and have drawn your own conclusions based on your own beliefs and life experiences, not anything I provided. You decided that I called you an atheist as an insult based on bupkus.

Context and character have everything to do with a words a meaning. "The N word" is widely considered one of the most offensive in our language, yet it's used by some in a context other than an insult. I would not suggest doing this on an internet forum (I would suggest not ever doing this anywhere but that's me. And Oprah..she's made this point as well). Likewise "atheist" can be used in less than flattering ways. Any label can be...which is my point.

You're an atheist. I won't insult you. I don't care what you are, what you do or what you look like, if and how you want to label yourself. I won't condemn your views or promote them.

Harry Lime
How could you take my reaction to what you said as "reading between the lines"? Your words speak louder than anything found between the lines. I quoted what you said exactly. If you want to be enigmatic and not have an opinion on religion, politics, or race, you are bound to have people "guessing" where you are coming from by reading what you write, not what you meant. I have no antenna for the word Atheist. I am not proud to be an Atheist anymore than I am proud to be white or brown eyed or to have two feet. Of what exactly should I be proud? (That could be quite an interesting thread). If there is anything of which I am proud, it is that I am "uninsultable" by anyone that does not know me, so feel free to tell me what you think. You are the one that lumped it in with other insults and I was just pointing out that it is not an insult any more than calling someone "brown eyed" or "gray haired". If I were brown eyed or gray haired those words would stick out when used as insults but I doubt you would use them along with "fag", "bible beater" or "right/left wing nut". "Atheist" being used in a less than flattering way is as possible as "homosexual" or "retarted" being used in a less than flattering way. It depends on the circle of people using it. As enigmatic as you may want to be, you lable yourself quite well.:)

I just realized the confusion

Jessica Tandy's husband is named Hume not Nick. And don't worry Shamus they are as in love as ever.
That was you, wasn't it, Shamus? You sounded different.

I was just channeling the inner-teenage girl inside me. You know, the one that actually cares about Jessica and Nick.

Pardon me for being behind-the-times, but who the devil are Nick and Jessica and why does everyone here seem to despise them so much?

As I just read all of last night's posts together, the timing of the above couldn't be better. Thanks for the morning laugh, Shamus.

To tell you the truth, Mud, I'm not really sure who they are. She sings? acts? and he... Really, I couldn't hazard a guess as to what he does, but I do have all the confidence in the world to say that he must do it poorly. I pulled the two names from the supermarket checkout line, and it could have been Jennifer and Brad for I cared. I was just trying to make a point. And why are they morons, and why do I despise them? Well, being the curmudgeon, cynic, misanthrope that I am (take your pick) any of the celebrated that are the zeitgeist of this fatuous era (yes, yes, I'm quite fond of that word, fatuous, it just happens to fit so well) are in my eyes moronic. Am I being unfair to them? Judging them without knowing them? Well, I think life has taught me that I don't have to eat piece of rancid pork to know that it's going to make me quite sick.

Kind regards,

Senator Jack

I wonder if...

...it COST Fedora Lounge members to belong, would so many STILL belong! I've only been a member since Sept. I think, so I'm one of those people who has been part of the growing pains. At first I did find myself straying off the subject once (ok maybe twice) and writing more and more provoking/heated posts! I put myself in check, because I realized I didn't join this thread to participate in p*ssing contests. There are flamers in this lounge. even though I did stray once or twice (ok maybe 3 times) I'm not one of them.Since that time I spent more time reading than posting. I'm here in Fedora Lounge to share and learn more with regards to my interest and obsession with old and now custom hats. I'd prefer to see the left and the right only be indications about which sleeve or pant leg you put your arm or leg into first! and ditto to what that guy said who the h*ll is NIck and Jessica???

The only thing that I'll add to this post is that I think our true strength is in our diversity. I believe that we need more than just two political parties that are viable. But at least the two parties can keep the center where it probably needs to be. You need the two extremes to keep a balance. I wouldn't want to live in a country thats all liberal or all conservative.
As far as politicians being gentlemen WHOA theres a stretch. Our politicians on both sides have been bought and paid for by corporations and special interest groups. Just look at whats going on now with all the corruption. I know not new but we can do better. As tax payers we should all be outraged at all this and should put pressure on the people we vote for to change these practices. Its on both sides of the isle so this isn't directed at any specific party. We're all Americans (those of use who are) and pay taxes and fight and die for this country and we deserve better....

Okay, I'm going to be the first to say that while I thought I was seriously out of touch with the modern world, always asking 'Who?' at those fatuous dinner parties I'm at, (ah, there's that word again) unless one has lived in a cave, (literally a cave, with stone walls and a big boulder for a front door) for the past year, he or she couldn't have not possibly heard of this whole bother with that duo. I watch tv for all of an hour a week and even within that span, there's at least some mention of the pair. Then there's the radio that's on when you enter any store these days. You can't even tune it out peripherally. It's impossible. Maybe it's just that I'm in NY where there's a tv or radio on everywhere and we have newspapers that run headlines on the two of them, so I heard of them (and, no, I don't read the newspapers either) Again, I don't know what the pair do, or if they actually do anything at all except to make headlines, but not having heard about those two morons in some capacity is like saying you haven't heard of Bush/Cheney. Though there used to be that show 'Street Smarts' that asked people such questions as 'Who is Dick Cheney' and, surprise surprise, they couldn't answer.

I'm not blasting anyone here, but I'm beginning to feel this is getting a bit Pythonesque with everyone going on about the thread title. Perhaps I should have called it 'Arthur Two-Sheds Jackson.'

Regards,

Senator Jack

You don't have to watch TV to know of Nick and Jessica. It's not possible to go grocery shopping and not see them pictured in the celebrity mags in the check out isle. Perhaps they need to add a "Free of candy, Nick and Jesscia" lane. I would like that, actually. I think I'll suggest it directly.

As for this being a gentleman's club, I hope that I am not intruding. I stay out of the men's fashions discussions.

I am sure that your perspective as a woman and all women are welcome here. You are not intruding at all. It is more about a discussion than it being a gentleman's club based on men only. That was just an example of the conduct required and expected here. You know "tut tut and all that rubbish." :p Feel free to participate as you wish by all means.
I do know what you mean about speaking about the other sex's fashions. You will not likely see me in the Powder room talking about such things either. ;)

Regards to all,

J

Nonsense, PSG. We need more of the ladies to participate in these discussions. And as for the men's fashions discussions, please give us more feedback. It's helpful to know what the ladies think about our dress. I'm not going to lie and say I don't think about it before I go out on the town.;)

You guys DO run a classy joint here, MK!

My goal has always been for this place to run like a gentleman's club of old. We can sip a brandy and discuss matters of the day (including religion and politics). The key is for members to treat each other with respect. That requires not getting too emotionally involved in debates. One must allow people to have opinions that they don't agree with.

Frankly, my opinion (mirroring what Varga says) is that this place ought to be primarily self-policing. People know (usually) when their words are going to make someone upset. I think that too many people hit the "Submit Reply" button before they've really thought through (or even read through) what they're about to post. Also, there is nothing to stop someone from coming back to a post and editing it or deleting it all together. (I do that frequently.)

I hope none of your bartenders quit. You've got a fabulous team!

So Nick and Jesscia are in show business?
From the way people wrote about them I thought perhaps they were murderous cop-killers or something. Like Bonnie and Clyde.
Thank goodness they're just plain old entertainers!

I live in New York too. I don't watch brodcast television or read the Post or the News so I'm able to remain happily ignorant of what's going in mainstream popular culture. In fact I shun it at all costs. And of course I know who Bush and Cheney are, Silly. They are the fellows I voted against.

Say....wait a minute. Are youse saying that Nick is two-timing Nora with this Jessica dame? Wot a lout! I never woulda thunk it.

And like my mama just to tell us kids, when we couldn't find anything good on TV. "It's got an off button, too." I just don't read the posts that I know are going to raise my blood pressure. There's plenty of other stuff.
