What's for Dinner?

While my son was feeding the chickens the other day an ornery rooster went after him and knocked him down. He's fine, my son I mean, we ate the rooster. We had a few extra roosters and were going to be culling at least one. I asked my son if he'd like to eat the one that, as he put it, tried to fight him. He said that that sounded like a great idea. On the way back inside he stopped, looked through the fence, and said: "Mr Rooster. You tried to fight me and now we're gonna kill you and eat you for dinner." Roasted with herbs and dry sherry, and served with baked potatoes and carrots huntington, that rooster made for a mighty fine dinner.

It's great for a kid to understand where their food comes from, and to have that kind of attitude about it.

Thank you, it's something my wife and I are keen to nurture for our son. Neither my wife or I were reared in a rural setting or remotely self sufficient, though we both were reared hearing stories about and visiting the members of our families that did and do. It's something we've both aspired to for a long while and have begun working towards achieving. Our son seems to enjoy it all, from livestock to firewood cutting which makes it all the more enjoyable.

Temporary duty in Kingston, Ontario again, so one of my favourite haunts, the hole in the wall Pilot House pub. Curried lamb pie and chips, and a pint of local ale. View attachment 166658 View attachment 166659
That looks delicious.

My kids were over tonight, so I fried up some bratwurst in the skillet and we had macaroni & cheese and green beans to go with them

Went to a cinco de Mayo party/cookout this evening. There was plenty of slow smoked pork butt and some lengua for tacos, and some bacon wrapped chorizo for snacking, and a pretty decent oreo cake for dessert.

Oreo cake you say, hmm, exactly what is that (asks this life-long Oreo fan)?

I had already finished shopping for stuff to make tacos when my daughter said something that reminded me it was Cinco de Mayo. I just accepted the cliché and enjoyed my tacos.

It was thin layers of chocolate cake stacked between layers of frosting that had oreos crumbled up in it, with more oreos crumbled up on top of the whole thing.

Thank you - I'm there.

Not a perfect representation, but for some reason, this image came to mind as I was reading your description:

I threw a can of Campbell's vegetable soup inside a sauce pan, toasted slices of wheat bread, and tossed saltines
then poured over the plate like mess hall s-o-s, but it was a hot meal at least.
