Hmmm here in the UK we use oil or lard not butter and call them Yorkshire Puddings. I guess lots of cultures had their own version of 'batter breads' sweet or savoury griddled or baked - but made from a basic batter with or without sugar.

Hah! We had shell mac&cheese too, only with navy beans, turnip greens, cornbread, and some super thick slices of bacon.
