What's for Dinner?

Here in the deep South we have a summer sandwich tradition called the Tomato Sandwich (also known as a mater sammich). It's as simple as it sounds: two slices of bread, a thick slice of tomato, mayo, salt & pepper to taste. Dress it up beyond that, and it's no longer a tomato sandwich.

Add a pound of bacon and you will have me onboard. That actually sounds more southern than just plain tomatoes too.

I have had such a sandwich on many occasions and was telling my students about said sandwich last week. Garden grown tomatoes are a real treat and nothing like store raised/bought.

It rarely is and from what I have heard, is quite difficult but very rewarding to those who have.

They are hard to grow, because if you water them too much, they wilt.

Will try to remember that one when I plant cardboard.. say: what's the best choice? Should I go for a colorful packaging, meaningful contents or.. chemical structure.. you know, to get the best results?

The standard brown cardboard works best, but is hard to find because most nurseries do not carry it anymore. If you can find some seeds, your best off. And remember, they thrive in direct sunlight; the are kind of like a cactus.

Be careful planting cardboard. It is a prodigious multiplier. Before you know it your whole house will be covered in cardboard, and it will have consumed a lot of your things.

We grow hybrid styrofoam in the woods (grows like mushrooms). Tastes almost like rice cakes. We feed it to the pigs so their 'bacon' floats in pancake syrup much better.
