I have often wondered, what on earth are 'Grits'?

A breakfast staple in the southern U.S., dried hominy, which has been ground into a coarse meal, then boiled into a porridge. In other parts of the world they are known as polenta. Similar to cream of wheat, but made from corn, not wheat.
Some folks eat them with butter and sugar. I prefer them with cheese, or plain with a little butter and salt and pepper, or bacon crumbled up in them.

I grew up with corn meal occasionally for breakfast, cream of rice was good too. It was the sort of thing, along with shredded wheat, milk toast etc. that we would have on a Sunday evening when we foraged on our own and when we just didn't know what we wanted.

Bacon is a nice addition.
Usually we add butter, salt, and lots of pepper.
