If length isn't a consideration I would've liked Amanda after my maternal grandmother and Ila Mae after my paternal grandmother. Living in Denmark it would probably be most practical if Amanda was my first name.

My mother is a baby boomer and they often had several first/middle names so a Danish name, and then an English name or two. My mother uses her first middle name and has never been called by her Danish first name. Her second middle name Kitt is a very typicall post war name for women of her generation.

I actually like the sound of names like Gerda and Erna when they're pronounced in Danish. Irma [Eerma] sounds nice too.:D I like flower names too and Rose is nice in Danish and Jasmin is nice in any pronounciation. Jasmin is considered contemporary but I think it's as timeless as the Rose names. I love the scent of Jasmins so I could really identify with that name.

Doris reminds me of a very classy aunt of mine so I like that name too. I can't pronounce English R's:eek:

Doris Irma Jasmin??? Amanda Ila Mae Doris.:)

Talullah Mae lol. My nickname is " Mae" already and I've always liked it, but I always thought my first name (Brandy) never had enough spunk to it. Plus saying Talullah Mae with a heavy southern drawl make happy on the inside.

:eek:fftopic: If this is "Gents Too" why is it in the Powder Room?

I think a lot of our posters put stuff in here that really ought to be in the Community section, either in Display Case or in Observation Bar.

it just annoys me as there are constantly threads being started in one area that have been in the other for ages, like the brand new "The Ones That Got Away" in the Display Case. Why would that subject be ladies only?

Maybe a lot of us girls never go to the other parts of the Lounge?

And really, the whole Lounge is getting so cumbersome - it needs a revamp with better subsections throughout.

I really ought to be a bartender, I know...

I have been guilty of clicking the "New Posts" button, seeing an interesting topic, posting a reply, and only then noticing that the thread was in a "Ladies Only" section.

And almost always on a subject that shouldn't be Ladies Only anyway, right?
I mean, the Powder Room is great for things like our lingerie discussions, girly parts health and the real down and dirty of relationship moaning... but collecting? Names? I just don't get it.

I am named Paul after a grandfather born in 1902 (last name too). But sharing his name is too much like living in his skin. We were already both Iowans, musicians, who worked in the media and had bald pates.

My vintage alter ego is Fletcher DeShays, my FL handle plus the name of a bar I once went to. He's a mysterious sort, a musician, singer, radio man. A traveler without any wares, but who always has a line. He cheats at life - gets slapped by women and decked by men - but always gets by, with a crack and a smile. I want to be more like him.

What's Fletch gotten himself into now?

Dear Fletch....well, I'd say--judging by your posts--that you're well on your way: "a mysterious sort; a musician...he...always gets by, with a crack and a smile"! :)

BTW, which or what Lexington is this? Kentucky? My maternal family was from there (Catholics)....moved North to Rhode Island when the Depression hit--and then prohibition ended. Her father was a traveller in distilled spirits...4 Roses, I believe...

It's probably worth the slaps....but try to avoid those deckings!

I don't like my name (Lauren) because when it became really popular right around when I was born. In every class I have taken there is at least one other Lauren...and usually more. I really like my grandmother's name, Lillian. Like others here, I also like Mae...which was my great aunt's name.

My real name isn't too bad. Nothing non-vintage about it. Our next child is probably going to be called Woodrow or Henry. Our girl is named Sofia.

Henry was on the short list, but we decided to go with Judge for our son. He's due any day now.

Congratulations indeed -- and with a name like Judge, he clearly has a fine career already laid out for him.

As for my name, Elizabeth is vintage enough to suit me. It comes from my father's sister -- who as far as I know came to a bad end, so I'm hoping this isn't prophetic. I narrowly escaped being named "Lisa," which was the name of my mother's favorite character on "As The World Turns" -- the town tramp, as I understand it -- so I guess I'm happy to have avoided that.

My best friend, however, *was* named after a soap opera, a forgotten radio serial called "Amanda of Honeymoon Hill." She writhed in embarassment when I unearthed a transcription of a sample episode and introduced her to her rather drippy name source. I told her she should have been thankful that her ma wasn't a fan of "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch."

I would not change my name.
1. It's typical danish (Scandinavian)
2. It has that strange danish letter Ø in it.
3. It goes back a long, long time.
4. It has never ever been among Top Twenty of names.

The name is SØREN

Hello!

But I could do the 'MovieStar or (PornStar)' trick and use my first pet's name and Mother's maiden name and become 'Sylvester Palmer'.

Haha, I guess that makes me Forban Brochu :p

My goodness...this thread is like a treasure trove for expecting mothers.

My name feels like it could pass for vintage to me, Marie-Anne. It's french so despite the spelling I pronounce it Mary-ann. People are always asking me, "Where's Ginger?" I don't think I would change my name.

My daughter is named Valentine Marie. I love that name and I always ask mysef how she will feel about it. She turns 1 this Easter!

Well, if I had to reinvent myself into a more "period name", I'd probably be inclined to stick to some grain of "relatedness" through the fictional characters who've had an influence on me...

"Jason Bourne"? No, too recent--difficult to use for an alias even today, no thanks to that little twit Damon... Rejected.

"Robert McCall"? Kinda refined, squarish, some degree of action-orientation, dignified. Maybe...

"John Clark"? Simple, timeless, common enough to easily hide in without going all the way to the obviously fake "John Doe". PERFECT!

Just call me "Mr. Clark" and reread your Tom Clancy, I guess, even though I am more personally biased toward "McCall" (The Equalizer)...

"Lily" is pretty vintage already, but some days I find myself drawn to "Maisey." Sometimes I think it would be fun to change names for awhile... sort of like hairstyles or jewelry, make it fit your mood or outfit.:D

:eek:fftopic: And speaking of outfits... Miss 1929, you mentioned this:
it just annoys me as there are constantly threads being started in one area that have been in the other for ages, like the brand new "The Ones That Got Away" in the Display Case. Why would that subject be ladies only?
Seems the guys far outnumber the gals on the Lounge, so I rather like being able to look at the Powder Room posts relatively quickly and not having to page thru the men's purchases to view dresses, jewelry, shoes, etc.. Just neater, more convenient and easier to keep a dialogue going with other women on those specific subjects.
