I also have an Eastern European male name (the late pope had my first name). but in the U.S., and specifically the midwestern U.S., it is always a girl's name.

"Yuri" in Japan is a girl's name and it means "Lily".

My parents were going to name me John because my mother had a grandfather with that name, and like him they were going to call me Jack. My middle name was going to be after my father, Daniel. For obvious reasons (like my father's taste in whiskey) they didn't think "Jack Daniel" was going to be a good idea so they flopped the names and I became Daniel John. Unfortunately, my father's middle initial is also J, so until I left home I never got to open my own mail!
I've been thinking of names for children over the years and the ones I hope to use if and when I have children would be Steve (after my grandfather and my brother), not sure on the middle name, for a boy and Beverly Marlene for a girl. Marlene was my mother's name and I have always liked them Beverly for some reason.

The hubby and I decided that if we ever had a girl her name would be Mischka Naomi (pronounced Meesh-ka) It means little mouse in his native Slovak language, I just changed the spelling up a bit, and Naomi after my great grandmother. I love the names Jack, Henry, Oliver and Felix for a boy

Even in my native country, people often get my name wrong, so I often just shorten it to Mai (it's really Mai Britt).. but even that is too confusing. Then think about going abroad, forget about people getting to say your name right especially Britt lol I have to repeat it more than once and even then most give up.

All of my names (first, sur and even nickname) rhymes with alcoholic beverages, so I grew pretty tired of that as a kid.

I remember as a kid wanted to be Sarah or just something very french or italian.

My given name, Kevin, is a lot more common today than it was when I was given it, in 1953....for many, many decades I was the only Kevin I knew, or knew of. Reason? My father is the eldest of 14 children, all but 2 of them males...and he didn't get along with his family AT ALL. When I came along, 11 years into the marriage and a first and only child (my mother was 39 at the time)...he was bound and determined that none of his brothers could say that I had been named after him! Most of the common Irish male names were therefore out of the running. How my parents came up with Kevin, I don't know...but Kevin it was.

Then there's my middle name...Den(n)is. Another nomenclature fistfight, this time between my parents! My mother chose this one, and wanted it to be spelled in the French manner, "Denis." My father, ever the pugnacious Irishman, preferred the non-French "Dennis" (BTW, he was raised in early youth by his French-Canadian grandmere, and French was his first language, so it wasn't prejudice!). It ended up 50/50....my birth certificate has "Denis;" my baptismal certificate--the sacrament was performed by an Irish priest!--has "Dennis." When my mother was alive, God rest her soul!, I tended to use "her" version....but now use Dennis.

As someone who has spent most of my life doing living history, "Kevin" just doesn't cut it. There are some scattered around the last few centuries, but for all practical purposes you had to have been born in or near Glendalough, Co. Wicklow....the Saint's stomping grounds. It's just too rare to be typical. So, for living history purposes, I've always used "Patrick McDermott" which is an EXTREMELY typical name for all centuries; many folks I know only in living history contexts know me by no other name.

As a Roman Catholic, I got a chance to pick a name for myself for my confirmation at about 12 or 13. I chose the name I would have chosen if I had been doing the given name choosing: Patrick. If I had to choose another name for myself, I think I'd probably choose "Owen" (Eoghan)...there are quite a few Ownies scattered around my family tree, including my great-grandfather, who was the one who emigrated to the US in the 1880s.

In the last five generations of my mother's family, at least one daughter was named Anne. I'm the last for right now, which means unless one of my cousins steals it, I have to name a daughter Anne as well.

I enjoyed reading people's name history.

I wish they'd named me Joan instead of Joannah (English pronounciation my family's always used, I don't react to the Danish pronounciation). Mainly because I'm sick of spelling ALL of my names to everyone (Mai Britt, I empatise! But I thought your name was normal for our generation). One of my middle names is Piya. Why complicate things more than necessary?!

In 1990 I added Amy to have one short, easily spelt -and pronounciated name because I was planning a CA, USA move in 1991. But Amy has only been used in 1994 when we were 4 [Joana's] in one class, so I'd prefer to lose Amy.

My mail is often addressed to Jonna or Johanne Krogsgaard I keep asking my husband who she is. Even when I've filled out automated formulas they insist on changing the name. I guess they assume that I'm prone to typos!

Maiden name's been Skou and Evans. I took my dad's last name when I moved State side because I just knew I'd have to spell Skou to everyone all the time if I didn't change my name. I already had to do that here in Denmark!

Evans is an adopted name. Apparently a Mrs. Lancaster re-married after Mr. Lancaster died. Mrs. Lancaster became Mrs. Evans and the kids including my paternal grandfather had their names changed too, so we've been Evans since. I like Lancaster better than Evans.

Some combination of my first name has always existed in my mother's family so it has some sentimental value to me; Johanne, Johannah, Joanna. Johanne has undergone some revival here in Denmark.

I'm glad I don't go by my birth name from before I was adopted: Pornsuda Chanprasert. Seriously! Having 'Porn' in your first name just wouldn't work in this part of the world.lol

I've always loved the name Daisy, even though I tweaked the spelling for my stage persona.

Names are always passed on in my family, though I'm glad some of us kids missed on out on various names in my family like Myrtle (my great grandma, Myrtle Taylor, descended from Zachary Taylor, 12th prez), Agnes (great Aunt Aggie, born in Czechoslovakia) and Laverne (on my dad's side).

My brother is named after our great grandpa (also from Czech.) Andrew. My mom is named Charlene after her dad Charles. Come to think of it...the name Anne and Mae have been in the family for a LONG time.

My mother paid for a family tree to be created, and we've got some other names like Ichabod (oy!) back a few centuries.

Maybe I'm already vintage?!?! Annie Mae...nope...sounds southern...or Irish. Even though I'm not Irish...

My name, Meredith, sounds pretty vintage, but I think it was most popular in the 80's. It's not necessarily the name I would have chosen for myself, but it works and everyone says it's a nice name and suits me. Plus it goes very well with the rest of my name. My middle name is Jane and my last name is a classic Scottish last name, so I sound pretty Celtic with the Welsh first name and everything!

My dad wanted to name me Isabel Jack after my great-grandmother though. That name would have been fantastic. I'm saving it for my own daughter if I ever have kids.

This is an interesting topic.

My first name is Larissa (pronounced Lareesah) and my middle name is Alice, which is after my great grandmother, whom is scottish.
As for what I wanted, I couldn't really tell you. I love the name Alexandria (if I'd had a daughter, that would have been her name)...maybe that's because my brother is named Alexander and I love that name so much...any name having to do with "Alex" is cool.

AS for my User name, on here...well, the first name was a nick name that my father gave me and last name is part of my maiden name (which I currently/legally use) and part of my married name conjoined.

I was going to be named Luke according to my mother, but there was already someone a bit older then me with my last name (no relation) named Luke so I was named Tyler instead (my nickname in real life is Tiller as well).

If I was going to change it to an old fashion name I'd probably pick Clark. When I was a boy I was a HUGE Superman fan (I remember watching Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman growing up, as well as getting the comic book at the local pharmacy when it came out). I thought the name Clark Kent was just amazing. With my ex I always said I was going to either name our first born son Tyler Jr or Clark. She hated both names, but since we aren't together anymore maybe that is what I will name my first born son if I ever have one. Who knows [huh] lol .
