what what your favorite 1960's movies?

what are some movies from the 1960's that are your favorite? one of my most memorable movies I remember very well that I went to see at the theater was The PLANET of The Apes starring Charlton Heston 1968 , the movie was very unusual and the make up looked so realistic for the time period, no CGI in those days!

I watched all the Planet of the Apes movies at the theater, I was a big fan "GO APE"

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) is my absolute favorite film of that decade. As for a movie not only made during the 1960s, but set contemporarily, I think Le Samouraï (1967) would be my favorite. Both are also excellent hat movies, as well. The main differences are that one of them is a western featuring western hats, and the other is a later film noir that has a fedora hat instead.

The first movie I can remember seeing in a theater was Bonnie and Clyde (1967). I would have been six years old at the time (heck of an introduction to cinema!), and I still have something of a soft spot for it even though I now know it's not historically accurate.

I saw Bonnie & Clyde in the theater too, I remember they use to stop movies for about 10 minutes for intermission so people could get a snack or use the restroom before the movie restarts.

they use to make the popcorn extra salty to make people buy more sodas

Off the top of my head, "Doctor Zhivago" is one I have seen six or seven times and will gladly watch again. Most of the "epic" movies made in that era of "epic" movie making were too much, but this one, based reasonably closely on Pasternak's novel, held together, developed characters, wrapped in historical events and kept it all moving along admits beautiful scenery and sets.

Also, the first three Bond films - which are, IMHO, still the best three.

I'm with you on the "Apes" movies. Also love all the Connery "James Bond" flicks (and even a few Roger Moore ones from the 70s, none so much since then though,but that's another thread). "Fist Full of Dollars" is my favorite of the spaghetti westerns, but I like most of those too. I also have fond memories of Peter Sellers in some of the Pink Panther movies from that era, haven't seen one in a lifetime, but my dad loved them when I was a kid and I loved watching them with him.

I agree Doctor Zhivago was certainly a standout movie for 1965. A female friend of mine (whom I was dating at the time) and I viewed it at a local theater then and occasionally over the years have reminisced about the affect it had on us all those years ago and other friends who saw it that same year. Ten years ago my Wife and I along with that friend and her husband attended a showing of the movie at a grand old style theater in Indianapolis. I must say It was just as epic for us in 2004 on the big screen as it was in 1965.

Oooh, we should have that thread then, since I consider the Roger Moore years to be the dark ages of Bond films. Thunderball is my favorite with Connery.

Agreed - very well done. But like "Leaving Las Vegas," it is one I only want to see once as it is very depressing and hung over me for days after I saw it.

My girlfriend and I saw it in 2005 at a grand old movie house here in NYC and, as you noted, it was very powerful. For us, it was our first time seeing it on a big screen which greatly enhanced its visual beauty.

All very good choices with the first two being standouts for me. Newman and Patricia Neal are on fire in "Hud" and Jackie Gleason shows his acting chops (along with Newman) in "The Hustler."
