Finished season three of Ozark. We really enjoyed this season.
Started season three of True Detective once again. I find it entertaining, but have attempted to make it through the season a few times, but not because it isn’t worthwhile, but because I get distracted by something and veer off. Halfway through the season and enjoying it. Better than average cast of actors, story, and cinematography.

We are thinking about subscribing to Acorn. There are a few shows that we enjoy that seem to be only found on Acorn.

It's not that much per month, and it offers a great number of titles. Our favorites were Foyle's War, Mr. and Mrs. Murder, the Brokenwood Mysteries, George Gently, Jennie (Churchill's mother), and on and on.

I am now into season six, second last, of Mad Men and really enjoying it! This may ultimately be a blu-ray purchase to ensure it is a keeper as Netflix has stuff come and go.

Also nearly done re-watching The Last Kingdom, tv serialization of Bernard Cornwell's historical novel series about early English (pre-Norman) "interaction" with the Danes. New series starts on April 26th.

Season 3 of "Fauda" last night or our title for it....."Doron, ignoring orders and continuing to stupid shit that might get him killed". However, we still enjoy watching it. Why are Israeli women so good looking?

Dave. FX/Hulu. This has turned out to be the surprise of the year for me. At least once an episode, I genuinely laugh out loud. The writing is clever. The cast has great chemistry. Reminds me of Girls or High Maintenance in ways. This past episode, Ally's Toast, had the vibe of Better Things. The situation was entirely ordinary, but the arc of the episode was very smart and affecting. It's already at a season finale next week, and I'm bummed.

About to finish Better Caul Saul season 5; I suspect we're now just one season away from overlapping the events in Breaking Bad. Be interesting to see how far they take that. I am also now fearing for Kim, given that she never appeared in BB....

Waiting for the second half of the final season of Vikings to drop on Prime.

Not had much time to binge as the lockdown has left me super-busy with onlnie teaching. I have been watching reruns of Mash on linear television most nights recently, though.... an awful lot of modern shows could do with observing it for a leson in script-writing and story arc. A self-contained story inside a perfectly paced 20 minutes; outside of comedy, I can't think of anything on television that comesclose to matching that now.

The Missus and I started Land Girls season three, and then realized we had seen it already. We can't remember where - PBS, Netflix, Amazon? We decided to continue, because it's still fun.
And, here and there, catching up on the dvr backlog of Bull, Seal Team, Blue Bloods, Blacklist, and (guilty pleasure) Live PD.

Season 3 Finale of "WestWorld". I knew they were gonna have to extrapolate a LOT once the action moved away from the (ahem) "Park" but I didn't have any idea where they were going to take us. I know that many didn't like this season but I loved it. Yeah some of Dolores' motivations could've been better explained but I consider that small quibbles. The world they painted outside of the park was fascinating... the whole idea of the "Ricoh App" was chilling and hilarious all at the same time. The best art makes you think...

I also watched the Westworld finale last night. Meh. I give them props for doing something REALLY different this season, but I had my usual response to Westworld: this show looks gorgeous, the actors are solid, but what the hell is going on? It exemplifies the Twin Peaks approach of keeping you off balance with continual surprises and offbeat revelations... which never add up to anything that makes sense. I agree that some of the future tech and society stuff was pretty interesting, but to what end?

I've been disappointed all along, but I can't stop watching. And by this point, I have zero faith in the show's storytelling integrity: despite her awful "final demise", I'm sure they'll find a way for Dolores to return next season!

Creepshow. AMC. Pilot? I remember loving the movie. I was looking forward to this. This had two 30-minute stories. The first had a sloppy story, and I didn't care for how they wrapped it up. I think the only reason they did this one is so the special FX people. The second story was a bit tame, but I liked it more than the first. A disappointing episode. I'm guessing this is going to be a series?

Killing Eve. AMC/BBC. They should go full-on Pink Panther mode with these characters. The overall story is weak and rather poorly explored. This season is all about the characters, which is fine, but I wish they'd have a better binding story. I don't find the characters and antics that amazing. I know many would disagree and love these women. That's cool. I just want a story. That's all.

World on Fire. PBS/Masterpiece. A period piece. Check. British. Check. Some of the sets make Victoria seem lavish. I don't know about this one. I wish Beecham House was airing.

If I'm reading you correctly, like you, we want to like this one better - it's got a lot of pieces we enjoy - but the story and characters are all just meh. Also, there are some inconsistencies that are hard to look past.

For example, the French resistance woman that was killing German soldiers saw and was horrified that the Germans were killing twenty five (number kept changing) random French people in retaliation for each German soldier killed, but then in the next episode, they show her killing one German solider at a time again.

Correct. I don't really care if it's British or not. I'm not an anglophile. I poorly communicated that. I meant to say that for a PBS audience, it checked big boxes. I think the writing, and maybe directing?, is so-so. I'm sure the actors are just fine. I've seen some of the actors in other productions, and they were better in those.

She's Polish and in Poland, and I agree. As I read it, killing 25 for their one just angered her and sent her off the rails. That makes sense, but if you're telling a story, I don't think you can, or should, put that responsibility on the audience to connect dots. It would have made maybe more sense that she lost her scruples after they shot her mother. It's a mini-series, and time restricts. I also get that, but they're wasting plenty of time elsewhere.

This reminds me of a conversation I had about Game of Thrones. The other person was just so amazed with the acting. They're good actors. No question. But I argued that the show is as good, or as bad, as it is because of the writing. That's what makes this show a classic and these other show otherwise. We've now seen the Game of Thrones actors in other productions, and most often, they aren't as good. There are other factors, like directing, editing, etc, but I'll place my last dollar on the writing being lesser. Same with the Downton Abbey cast. If you read about Hollywood, there's no shortage of stories, but there's a shortage of good storytellers. Getting off the horse now.
