I almost didn't want to tell you about this one, but last night HBO aired the documentary 'Inside Deep Throat.' It didn't really dwell on the making of the film itself, but about its impact on American culture in the 1970s. It was the 'in' thing to go see it. It was cool for Hollywood stars to be seen going to the theater to watch it. I didn't know this fact until watching this documentary, but Deep Throat is the most profitable movie in film history. I have to admit that I did see it back in college (at the university's student union theater of all places). The line went around the block to get in. This documentary is rated NC-17 (for obvious reasons), but it is one of the best documentaries I've seen. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Had a film fest and watched Land Girls, Hope and Glory, and Enigma in one go - consecutively that is. Holding out for the Transformers DVD release though, and was very much into the wardrobe decisions for 300!

This drama follows a fellow who apparently has a mental disorder that manifests with him shooting woman.
Of interest to note is the doctor who recognizes the sniper's disorder and urges passage of a law to deal with sexual offenders.
Good location work too. This should be on dvd.

That's my favorite Billy Wilder film! (Which took me years to decide - he made so many fantastic movies!) It's been much on my mind while watching Mad Men...

I first saw Straw Dogs when I was assigned to HQUNC J-3 Youngsan Compound, Seoul, ROK in the early 70's. All I remember are Susan George and the bear trap. Mostly the former.

Straw Dogs was an extremely controversial film when it was first released in the UK, indeed it was banned when the Video Recordings Act 1984 was passed, one of a range of so-called "video nasties" to receive that treatment. Pretty much all of those original "video nasties" have now been released and are considered tamer than they were back then. I picked up SD out of professional interest (I'm an academic lawyer by trade, my area of specialism being media law, and in particular regulation of content) some time after its release, uncut, on DVD in 2002. It's not an espcially good or bad film. Not one I'd jump to see again (buying the DVD in sales was cheaper than hiring it - not to mention that the only video store near me is a Blockbuster where, with very few exceptions, they don't keep anything much beyond six months from release). The violence was really rather thame by today's standards, but I think the rape scene is still a touch on the edge today - it is rather long and throughout the victim appears to be enjoying the attack on some level, which makes the whole thing quite disturbing.

The last film I saw was Farenheit 9/11, which was repeated on UK television last night. The next big cinema release for me is going to be Tarantino's Death Proof - I'm looking forward to it, though the edge has been taken off it somewhat for me by the decision to distribute it and its companion piece as separate films in the UK, thus negating the original Grindhouse concept.

I concur. Didn't think Norton could carry that one, but he most definitely did. Anybody tried Perfume? Strange, and strangely fixating. Like watching the sounds of dark poetry.

I watched The Bridge last night. As well as Idoricitcy. What a combo.

I watche Perfume, LOVE the soundtrack, but the movie was told like a fairy tale. I adored the camera trailing off to no particular resolution, like a sent that gets lost in the air. Very good stuff.

I'm watching The Monster Squad before I have to go to work...Wondering why my parents took me to see this movie when I wasn't even three-years-old when it came out.

I don't know why, maybe it's because it was such a huge part of my childhood, but I absolutely love this movie.

Fred Dekker said it was inspired by Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (there's one scene in particular where this is evident, you see Dracula changing from human to a bat) and the classic Universal monsters. (Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the mummy, the creature--he looks amazing in this film, and the wolf man all make appearances.)
