I finally saw Red Tails on a library DVD. Though kind of a mess, it was nowhere near the Pearl Harbor-level abomination I was expecting.

Yes, the old HBO film The Tuskegee Airmen did a much better job telling the dramatic story. Yes, an awful lot of the dialog and performances reflected attitudes that were far too contemporary. Yes, the continual dogfights with the same German flier "Pretty Boy" were absurd. Yes, some of the subplots (the POW sequence, the romance with the Italian woman) were so undercooked they seemed like mistakes. Yes, in general the writing/acting/direction were much weaker than the production design, CGI, and effects work.

I constantly had the feeling that the film's storyboards were probably better than the film itself: it played much more like a silver age comic book than a movie. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they could have aimed a lot higher.

Of course, the P-40s, P-51s, A-2s, B-10s, etc., were all gorgeous!

I'm still on that Clark Gable kick, watched Boom Town last night. Not bad, but not great. Hedy Lamarr is always worth watching, but I've never understood why people go nuts over Claudette Colbert...

"The Bed Sitting Room". In its day its post-apocalyptic black humor must have been fresh and hilarious (Spike Milligan, et al), but now it's just weird.

I had a much better time Friday night at the original OKC Paramount film exchange screening room - recently restored into a coffee house/wine bar, and screening room - watching "The African Queen".
